ADS1298R: Wiring respiration leads

Part Number: ADS1298R

Hello! Section 9.3.1.7.8.2 of ADS1298R datasheet describes:

When this respiration option is enabled, ADS129xR channel 1 cannot be used to acquire ECG signals. If the RA and LA leads are intended to measure respiration and ECG signals, wire the two leads into channel 1 for respiration and channel 2 for ECG signals.

So:

1) is it possible to wire the two leads (RA and LL) into channel 1 for respiration and channel N != 1 (for example 6) for ECG signals?

2) is it possible to connect leads RA and LL to some else inputs while ones already connected to IN6 and RES circuit?

  • Hello Alex,

    Thank you for your post.

    1. Yes. Please see the circut description in the Applications section (10.2.1).

    2. Yes.

For additional examples, you may also refer to the ADS1298RECGFE-PDK User Guide. There are schematics appended to the end of the document as well for typical 12-lead ECG applications.

    Best Regards,
  • Thank you, Ryan! Only one thing confuses that in all examples, respiration is measured precisely between RA and LA
  • Hi Alex,

I believe it's also possible to meausure respiration using other electrode combinations as well, but I don't have the expertise to say for sure and what tradeoffs there may be. In general, you're trying to measure the change in impedance across the thoracic cavity during respiration, so measuring between RA and LA clearly includes this impedance.

    Best Regards,
