ADC34J45: A question about proper grounding of the unit

Part Number: ADC34J45

Hi.

I'm using ADC34J45EVM with TSW14J56EVM.

I want to ask if it is necessary to ground the units in case they are connected to a source which is in the outdoors. I'm afraid that possible ESD or other things may have negative effects on the boards.

If so, I would be really grateful if you help me to do it correctly.

Is it correct to connect the GND on both units to an earth ground?

Regards.

Fernando

  • Hi Fernando,

Sorry for the delay. I have forwarded your question to the device expert and he will get back to you.

  • Hi Fernando,

While I'm not certain as to what conditions you are specifically facing, I would say that having earth ground for both units is ok. You are powering both of the EVMs with separate supplies?

    Best Regards,

    Dan
  • hi Dan,

    Thank you for your reply.

Yes. Each EVM is connected to a separate power supply. Let me clarify a little bit, An antenna signal is connected to one of the channels of the ADC EVM. Since the antenna is placed in the outdoor I was afraid it may possess possible negative effects on the board.

We have earth ground in the LAB, but I'm not sure how I should connect it to the boards, to which socket on the boards in particular.

    Thanks.

  • Hi Fernando,

If you are using the barrel plug connectors (+5VDC) on the ADC34J45EVM and TSW14J56EVM, and these are sharing the same ground (connected to the earth ground), I think this is sufficient.

If you expect high/low voltage may find its way to the analog input, you might want to consider a buffer or some kind of signal conditioning.

    Best Regards,

    Dan
  • Thank you so much.

Yes, I'm using two separate typical barrel plug connectors for the units.

Just one more question. Actually, the wall socket that we use for the adapters doesn't have earth ground on it!

We have a separate earth ground in the LAB. is it possible to use the adapters and connect a separate cable from that grounding to a specific place on the board for earth grounding?
  • Hi Fernando,

The mini-USB (J18 on the ADC34J45EVM) housing might be a good place since all 4 "mounting pads" are connected to the board ground. You could also connect to the ground test points like TP9 and TP20.

Similarly for the TSW14J56EVM, the USB connector (J9) and the various ground test point on the board could work (TP5, TP18, TP25, TP33, etc...)

    Hope that helps.

    Best Regards,

    Dan
