I am working on a capstone project related to neural network application for an array processing problem as the member of a team of senior electrical engineering students. We would like to use eight microphones working simultaneously in order to evaluate beamforming algorithms. So, we need a high-speed digital signal processing unit for high speed simultaneous audio processing, which led us to decide to use EVMK2GX module manufactured by TI. On the
other hand, we are using analog microphones in order to process the audio signals more precisely by adjusting the gain. Thus, analog microphones must be connected to the mentioned DSP with an analog to digital converter (ADC). Our main problem is related to the ADC.

The ADC we are considering to use is ADS8588SEVM-PDK. However, we would like to take the digital data from ADC simultaneously to DSP(EVMK2GX) in order to process with array processing methods. Is it possible to interface the mentioned ADC ADS8588SEVM-PDK with given DSP(EVMK2GX) simultaneously with USB interface? According to the datasheets, ADS8588SEVM-PDK requires a PC connection for data acquisiton. Is there any alternative and possible connection (parallel/serial) directly from the evaluation board to DSP for the simultaneous interfacing to process the eight channel audio input precisely in the beamforming algorithms?

We would like to design our system with a strong processor unit, for which EVMK2GX seems to be very useful. Speed and precision is important in beamforming algorithms. We kindly request your profound advice on the subject of simultaneous interfacing of ADC ADS8588SEVM-PDK unit with DSP(EVMK2GX) or another TI ADC model that is compatible with the DSP and the task given above.

    The ADC you are looking for is ADS8588S, ADS8588SEVM-PDK is an evaluation board with PHI controller card to test and evaluate ADS8588S ADC.

    If you want to connect ADS8588SEVM-PDK to EVMK2GX board, J9 on ADS8588SEVM is the only connector for parallel and serial interface from ADS8588S ADC on the board, another alternative solution is test points for serial interface(TP11-SCLK, TP10-/CS,TP8-SDOB,TP7-SDOA,TP9-BUSY,TP12-CONVSTB,TP13-CONVSTA).

    If you design your own circuit and system, ADS8588S supports parallel, parallel byte and serial interface.

    Please check the User's Guide of ADS8588SEVM-PDK, and ADS8588S datasheet.

    Thank you very much for your response. Excuse my confusion about the evaluation modules though... Should we buy EVMK2GX or just 66AK2G12 to implement signal processing codes on a DSP which takes its input from the output of the ADC?

  • Hi Sueda,

    I'm not the expert for these processors, you can check their datasheet/user's guide or ask the question in processor E2E forum to determine if these processors have right peripheral to interface ADS8588S ADC, ADS8588S supports Parallel, Parallel byte and SPI serial interfaces. Please let me know if you have any more questions about ADS8588S.
