alternative to MCP3551

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADS1220, ADS1120, ADS1118, ADS1119, ADS1219

Hello team,

I bumped into the MCP3551 ADC from microchip in one of my customers and was thinking if we have anything similar that could replace it. I'm looking for a high resolution sigma delta A/D converter for Pt100,Pt1000, small form factor, range -40...100°; could you please suggest me anything similar?

Thank you and best regards,

Adrian

  • Hi Adrian,

thanks a lot for reaching out with your question.

The best device to position against MCP3551 for RTD measurements would be the ADS1120 (16-bit) or ADS1220 (24-bit). Those two ADCs are higher integrated (VREF, PGA, IDAC, Temp Sensor, etc.) than MCP3551 and specifically designed, besides others, for RTD measurements.

The application section in the datasheet shows typical RTD measurement circuit implementations.
We also have a more elaborate application note about RTD measurements available: A Basic Guide to RTD Measurements

The ADS1118 (16-bit) would be a lower-cost solution, but RTD measurements cannot be implemented as nicely with it as with the ADS1120/ADS1220.
Devices that are closer to MCP3551 in feature set would be the ADS1119 (16-bit) and ADS1219 (24-bit). But they only come with an I2C interface.

    Regards,
