ADS8556: ADS8556

Part Number: ADS8556

Hi,

We are using the ADS8556 ADC (16-bit) in one of our projects. I had a question on the configuration register on the chip. The datasheet doesn't have any significant information on this configuration register. We are in need of this information so as to perform the SEU and MBU analysis and our main concern is after the ADC is configured (HW mode and parallel interface) what are the chances that the configuration will be lost due to neutron radiation effects (at higher altitudes). Also, it would be great if you could provide us with any test report or test summary document on this topic for this P/N.

Thanks & Regards

Guru

  • Hello Guru,

The Control register(CR) on ADS8556 can only be configured or changed in Software Mode, since you have configured the ADC to Hardware Mode(HW) by connecting HW/SW pin to low, hence the content or configuration in CR register will NOT be able to affect your HW configuration and ADC's conversion.

    Thanks.

    Regards,

  • Hi Dale,

Thanks a lot for the reply ! Its kind of relieving to hear that....but I have the following clarifications:

    1. So since the configuration is done in hardware mode, the configuration signals (like the CS, RD, SER_PAR, WORD_BYTE...etc) will not be stored in any internal ADC register/buffer but will be read and used by the ADC control logic in real time?
    2. I'm a bit confused with the terminology in the datasheet..Both the terms "configuration register" and the "control register" are mentioned ...are they both referring to the same thing? It looks like when I see the bit numbers mentioned in the datasheet of the ADS8556EVM board.
    3. Also, if there is any Single Event Upset Test Report for this P/N, do please let me know if we could access it.

I promise these will be my last questions.

    Thanks for the help !!

    With Regards
    Guru
  • Hi Guru,
Please see my answers for your questions:
    1. No, these are directly controlled by the signal on the pins in Hardware mode.
    2. Both terms are same, ADS8556 has only one internal register. Please see section 7.5 Register Maps.
    3. Unfortunately, we do not have this kind of report.
Please let me know if you need any further support.

    Thanks&Regards
