ADS1232: Problem interfacing with ADC

Part Number: ADS1232
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADS1234

Hello all,

I am having problems interfacing with the TI ads1232

I started with the post here: https://e2e.ti.com/support/data-converters/f/73/t/560004?Help-with-setting-up-an-ADS1234-with-4-load-cells-to-an-Arduino-Uno-or-a-Raspberry-Pi-3

I am using a arduino mega to interface with the device.

My circuit is very similar to the one described in the post above, with the exception that my CLKIN is grounded, and i only am using one of the input channels.

I have been trying to troubleshoot the interface by just reading the internal temperature from the device by placing pin 7 high, but I am getting a value of zero.

could you please advise on ways to fix the interface, or verify if the chip is bad?

  • Hi Donald,

Welcome to the E2E forum! Can you send me your schematic? Do you have access to a logic analyzer or oscilloscope where you can capture the communication? Make sure that both AVDD and DVDD supplies are active at the device pins of the ADS1232.

Using a scope, I would suggest that you monitor the DOUT/DRDY pin to see if it is toggling. You should see it toggling every 100ms if the Speed pin is low and every 12.5ms if the Speed pin is high. This will verify if the chip is working or not. The PDWN pin should stay low until after all supplies are active then go high. Pulsing this pin will reset the device to the correct operating condition.

When DOUT/DRDY transitions from a high to low state, new conversion data is ready to be read out of the device.

    Best regards,

  • thank you for your response. I dont really have a schematic, but it is hooked up almost identically as the previous post, except i removed the load cells in order to troubleshoot. I hooked it up to an oscilloscope, and there was toggling when the temp pin was high, and there was no toggling when the temp pin was low. Does this indicate that the chip is working, but that i am unable to interface for some reason?

  • Hi Donald,

The ADS1232 DOUT should be toggling whether the Temp pin is high or low. So this kind of sounds like to me that something is hooked up incorrectly. The ADS1232 and ADS1234 are similar, but the ADS1232 has fewer pins. Can you send me specifically what you have connected to each pin of the ADS1232? Maybe a camera phone shot might also be useful for me to see what is going on.

    Best regards,
    Bob B
