Hi Jim -

The issue here is not with reserved registers - it is with how to deal with reserved bits in "unreserved" named registers that we are writing values to.

If I need to set a bit in a register that has reserved bits within it, can I do a simple write of the new value to the register with all reserved bits set to 0, or do I need to do a read/modify/write cycle to ensure that the reserved bits are unchanged.

Just do a simple write of the new value to the register with all reserved bits set to 0, unless the reserved bit is called out to be a "1".

Thanks Jim - can I assume that "unless the reserved bit is called out to be a 1" means that if the bit is shown as 1 in the reset value specified in the datasheet ?

If the bit is reserved, use whatever value is shown in the reset column. Is this what you are asking?
