ADS8688: Almost every customer uses AD7606 in Grid Infrastructure products(DTUs, FTUs...), ADS8688 has only 8 chananls while AD7606 has 16 channals, does TI have any update to beat AD7606 in the future?

Part Number: ADS8688
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADS8588H, ADS8588S

Almost every customer uses AD7606 as an AFE in Grid Infrastructure products(DTUs, FTUs...), ADS8688 has only 8 chananls while AD7606 has 16 channals, does TI have any update to beat AD7606 in the future? As AD7606 is a very old product and had been used for years.

  • Hello Mike,

    Welcome to E2E forum.

Firstly, AD7606 is an 8-channel input ADC, not 16-channel. Secondly, ADS8588S is the right ADC to compete with AD7606, ADS8588S has a better performance with integrated analog front-end(AFE) on each channel and pin-to-pin compatible as AD7606. Also, ADS8588H has a higher sampling rate up to 500ksps if the customers need. Please see the list below to get more information about this ADC family.

    Thanks&regards,

    Dale

  • Dale,

Sorry! I give you the wrong P/N, the correct P/N should be AD7616, this is a 16-channal ADC while AD7606 is a 8-channal ADC.

  • Hi Mike,

TI ADS8688 was released to the market in 2014 which was the first ADC to support HV bipolar input with a Mux and AFEs also +5V  single power supply. AD7616 was seen in the market in 2016, two ADS8688s can be used to achieve same functionality as AD7616, actually many Grid Infrastructure customers have used one or two ADS8688s to design their systems. However, we have a new single ADC with better performance which will be released to the market soon, please contact TI local support (FAE and sales) in your region for more information.

    Thanks&regards,

    Dale
