DAC8775: Vref variation and gain/offset calibration

Part Number: DAC8775

Hello team,

I'm using the DAC8775 in some new boards.

What I verify is that the Vref of all the chips is systematically 'low' by about -0.1% and, as a consequence, the maximum voltage that can be supplied in the -10V / + 10V range is 9.99V.
The value is still within the stated tolerance specification, but I was intrigued that the graphs on p. 29 of the DS report Vref values around 4.995V, i.e. 'low' of -0.1%.
It therefore seems that 4.995V, instead of 5.000V, is the most probable value for the Vref of the DAC8775.
Is there a graph of the distribution of the value of the Vref?

Also I noticed that the chip has registers to calibrate gain / offset.
Gain values> 1.000 can be set. But this does not allow me to increase the full scale voltage anyway, so I don't understand its usefulness.

Ultimately, it seems to me that the only solution to reach 10.00V with internal Vref is to use the 12.00V range.
It's correct ?
Please let me know.
Thank you and best regards,
Adrian
  • Adrian,

The calibration mechanisms are purely implemented in the digital domain, so they are not capable of overcoming issues like output voltage swing to rail at either positive or negative rails or, as you have pointed out, limitations associated with either the internal or external reference. The calibration features are primarily aimed at the linear region of operation as typically calibration is performed here, not at the absolute zero and full scale codes to avoid any non-linearity (although in this case most situations will be linear since the DC/Dc provides headroom and footroom).

I would mention that a "low" reference doesn't always mean that the DAC output will also be low as positive-going gain or offset errors could overcome this effect, though generally reference error is the largest contributor.

I can work on acquiring the reference distribution information, but we will need to share that offline as it is TI confidential information. As such we will also need to ensure there is an NDA in place with your customer.

  • Hi Kevin,

yes please, let's move this offline.

    Thank you and best regards,

    Adrian
