ADS1256: Works without sync

Part Number: ADS1256

Hi Teaam,

What will happen if I switch only input channels and do not execute synchronization during Continuously Converting?

In the case of a step change, as shown in Figure 21 on datasheet P18, the following data must be discarded, but the correct data can be read after that.

Is it the same when switching input channels?

Best Regards,

Kenji

  • Hi Kenji-san,

Switching the input on the ADS1256's multiplexer should be treated like a step change. If the multiplexer inputs change during a conversion, the output data will be a mix of the previous channel and the new channel's data. Issuing the SYNC command ensures that you are reading the correct channel's data once the multiplexer channel has switched. It might be possible to perform this timing manually without the SYNC command (or SYNC pin) e.g. in an MCU, but this is not the recommended communication method.

If you want to cycle through the ADS1256's inputs, the recommended communication process is shown in Figure 19 in the ADS1256 datasheet. Following this protocol will ensure correct device operation.
