TSW14J56EVM: Eval board DDR failure and return options?

Part Number: TSW14J56EVM

I wanted to evaluate the ADS52J65EVM which required the TSW14J56EVM.  I had purchased these boards June 27, 2019 and was just finally
getting around to using them.  One minor issue and one major issue arose.  First, the available download of the High Speed Data Converter Pro Software
was version 5.0.  When running with this eval board and the ADS52J65 driver software, it warned that some GUI functions may not be compatible and to
use version 4.5 to 4.9. But I can't find how to get version 4.9 of the High Speed Data Converter Pro software.  However this seems minor.
The main problem is the TSW14J56EVM is failing the DDR test.  With separate 5V supplies to both boards, and turning on the TSW14J56EVM, it then pulls
about 1.5 Amps.  I then start up the High Speed Data Converter software, which recognizes the TSW14J56EVM serial number to select,
and sometime after here I get the compatibility message  about the GUI version which I ignore.  I then download
the ADS52J65 firmware (from the upper left).  This causes more initialization of the TSW14J56EVM FPGA.  In this process LED D8 briefly flickered ON, but is
ultimately off and LED's D7 and D6 are on.  I saw in some user forum that this alone is a sign of memory failure. LED
D3  is ON.  In attempting the first exercise of the ADS52J65 (80 MSPS, 4 lane, ADC - not ramp), and 32767 samples,
when I hit capture, D3 turns OFF, and D4 blinks ON/OFF.  Then after a timeout I get the error message for Read DDR to file.
Unless there some common board error, or the GUI compatibility, unless the user forums are incorrect, it means the board is unusable. What do I do
with it? It costs almost $1200-1300 at the time purchased directly from TI.  Is there any warranty option? I can buy one from Digit-Key for almost $1500, for
quick turn-around to minimize further delays, but this is a lot of money to throw around for a university group waiting for new grant funding in a pandemic!
  • Hello Greig,

Can you please ensure the following and let us know your observations.

    1. Power Supply – Please make sure that 5V supply to TSW14J56EVM is rated for at least 3 amps as per the TSW14J56 User Guide.
    2. Check LED D17(DDR3 VREF good), D10(Board power) are on as said in page 6 of TSW14J56 User Guide.
    3. Please make sure that you download the default “TSW14J56REVD_LMK_SYSREF_TRIGGER” Firmware is downloaded.

You could verify this by making sure the Interface Type = “TSW14J56REVD_LMK_SYSREF_TRIGGER” in HSDC pro GUI

    1. You could also manually download firmware by (HSDC pro GUI >> Instrument Options >> Download Firmware >> select “TSW14J56REVD_LMK_SYSREF_TRIGGER”)
    2. The ADS52J65 EVM GUI is tested with TSW14J56 EVM using HSDC pro v4.9. We recommend using HSDC pro v4.9 but it is completely fine to use ADS52J65 EVM GUI with HSDC pro GUI v5.0. This does not cause any issue.
    3. Please refer to the image below for understanding on status LED.

  • I had replied but it looks like it was to the customer service provided link for CS0188310 Here is a repeat:

I am using a 5V power supply rated for 4 amperes, so power is not an issue. Both LED D17 (Vref good) and LED D10 (board power) are ON. I also verified a manual download of the interface type = TSW14J56REVD_LMK_SYSREF_TRIGGER The symptoms persist. LED D8 is off (MEM FAIL), LED D7 (MEM Success) is ON, and LED D6 (MEM init) is ON. When I hit capture LED D3 goes off, and LED D4 starts blinking. D8 remains off, and D6, D7 are on.  I will get the "Read DDR to File Timed Out Error"

  • Greig,

Based on the below LED status,

    1. D8 (MEM Fail) – OFF
    2. D7 (MEM Success) – ON
    3. D6 (MEM Init) – On

It seems like there is some problem with TS14J56EVM DDR since the calibration is failing.

Please contact TI customer service for a replacement TSW board. Let me know if they require any other information from us to get you a new board.
