[FAQ] ADS124S08: How do I measure temperature using a thermocouple (TC)?

Part Number: ADS124S08
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADC-TEMP-SENSOR-FW,

I want to make a thermocouple temperature measurement using an ADC.  Do you have information on how to make this type of measurement?  And do you have any example code on how to convert the thermocouple voltage to a temperature?

  • The best place to begin is to look at A Basic Guide to Thermocouple Measurements.  This is a useful guide explaining how a thermocouple works.  There is also useful information on connecting the thermocouple to an ADC and the calculations needed to convert the thermocouple voltage to a temperature.

Additional circuit examples can be found in the Analog Engineers Circuit Cookbook.

There is also an additional resource available that reduces the 'C' code effort.  The API applies specifically to the ADS124S08, but the code and examples can also be used for other ADCs with some additional modification.  This API tool is ADC-TEMP-SENSOR-FW, and can be installed on Windows or Mac.
