DAC8814: DAC8814 for high frequency digital to analog conversion

Hi,

    I need to generate 2 voltage signals of 500 KHz frequency and +/-5V output range with an accuracy of 16 bits. By going through the products DAC8814 seems good. However unlike ADC where the throughput is clearly mentioned, DAC output rate is given as settling time.

1) DAC8814 is having a settling time of 0.5us. I believe this for 0000h to FFFFh transition. Since I am generating a sinusoidal signal, whether this will create an issue.

2) Is there any other DAC with better than DAC8814 satisfying my requirements.

3) I am planning to interface it with F280049C Launchpad kit. Hope it wont create any issue.

4) The DAC is current output and I need voltage output. Whether I can use the DAC8814EVM for initial prototyping of this application.

  • Hi Karthik,

    Your maximum sample rate will really determine the maximum bandwidth you could achieve with this DAC.  The sample rate can be gated by the settling time or the digital interface. We have a TI Precision Lab about this topic.

    If your sample rate is significantly larger than your output signal, e.g. a 10kHz sine wave being produced by a 500ksps update rate, then your individual step size is smaller and should settle faster.  Now if you are trying to create a 250kHz sine wave with a 500ksps update rate, you are really just creating a square wave, so your settling time will be much longer.

    Our MDACs and unbuffered voltage output DACs are our fastest devices, so you are wise to start there.  You could also look at the DAC8832 and the DAC11001A.

       Thanks a lot for the reply and the video tutorial. I have gone through the same and it reflects what you mentioned in the reply. So for 8814, with settling time 0.5us and 50MHz serial clock, an effective sampling rate of around 1 MSPS will be getting (if 2 DACs are used).

    Both are having 1us settling time which is worse than DAC8814 (0.5us) ryt. So whether it ll defeat the purpose.
