THS1206: How to read Control Register

Part Number: THS1206

The data sheet for the THS1206 (SLAS217H) states that bit 1 of Control Register 1 has a dual purpose:

a. In read mode it is the overflow flag (OVFL).

b. In write mode it is FIFO Reset (FRST).

However, I cannot figure out how to read this register. As far as I can tell, when writing to a Control Register, register selection is via bits 10 and 11. But how is register selection done when reading?

Also, are all the bits in Control Register 1 readable?

Hi Yosuf,

In order to read the configuration registers of the THS1206, you need to be in debug mode, which means setting bit 9 of CR1. Bit 1 of CR1 is write and read, but as you noted already, writing to bit 1 resets the FIFO (clears the OVFL flag).

Hi Tom,

Thanks for your quick response. However, I have 2 more questions.

1. In order to set bit 9 of CR1, I must write to CR1. But in doing so, will I not alter the remaining bits of CR1? Unless setting bit 9 locks the other bits in place. This is not mentioned in the manual.

2. According to the manual, "to get the THS1206 back to the normal operating mode, apply the the initialization routine." So once in Debug mode, the only way to get back to normal operation is to reset the THS1206?

Hi Yosuf -

1.) You need to write the entire register, there is no way to just set bit 9 of CR1. Bit 9 does not lock out the other bits in the register.

2.) Correct - reset the device and then re-start your conversion routine.
