DAC7551-Q1: Temperature Range

DAC Experts,

I'm interested in using the DAC7551-Q1 in an automotive application.  The package size and daisy chaining are attractive for my application, but the temperature range is not.  From an outsiders perspective it looks like there is a very good chance this is the same die as the 6551 with a different bond out.  The 6551 is rated for 125C operation but the 7551 is only rated for 105C, but at the same time the 7551 has a max recommended junction temperature of 150C.  What is the story on the temperature range of this part?  Is this a limitation due to the package?

    Hi Trey,

    I suspect that the 150°C max shown in the recommended table is an oversight.  Though it is important to note that it is technically valid.  The max value is still limited by the abs max value, which is the same as the max recommend value.  That being said, all of the specifications are only guaranteed to the max specified temperature of 105°C.  My understanding is that the specified temperature is limited to 105°C as the specifications would be out of limit at 125°C.

    Thanks Paul.  I figured the 105 limitation was due to exceeding the specifications past that.  Can you speak to this being the same die as the 6551?

    The datasheet also mentions a Z suffix which improves delamination, but isn't described further in the datasheet.  Could you describe this delamination issue in more detail?

    Hi Trey,

    My understanding is that these are not the exact same die, but are very similar.

    I will need to reach out to our quality team to confirm the difference with the Z variant.

    Hi Trey,

    I got some clarification on this.  In the original automotive qualification, the device did not have a roughened lead-frame.  We later completed a second qual with a roughened lead frame which was the z version.  In march of 2015 this leadframe change was implemented on both versions, so they now both have the same delamination improvement.  You can order whichever orderable is in stock (non-z, I believe).  We will eventually remove this entry from the PDS.
