Data Converter Recommendation

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADS131A02, ADS131M04, ADS1219

Hey Team,

I am working on a digital multimeter project that requires 200,000 counts of resolution (>=18-bits). I am looking for a device suggestion that can achieve this resolution with a reasonably low drift (<3 ppm/deg C if possible). Delta-Sigma is preferred.

Any suggestions?

Best,
Dajon McGill

  • Hi Dajon,

How many channels and what type of sampling rate is the customer interested in?

Is simultaneously sampling required or is a muxed input acceptable?

  • Hey Alex,

Two or more channels w/ simultaneous sampling. Muxed is acceptable, only if we can achieve >=18 bits of noise free resolution.

Sampling rate is not a large concern. >=2SPS should be fine.

  • Hi Dajon,

I would recommend taking a look at the ADS131yxx family, where y is either "M", "E", or "A" (low to high grade) and xx is the number of channels.

All grades of the ADS131yxx family are simultaneously sampling and capable of meeting >= 18 bits of noise free resolution with a higher over-sampling rate (OSR). I would start with the ADS131M04, which will be the lowest cost solution, 4 channels solution. The ADS131A02 is another option, with only two channels, capable of higher noise free resolution.

I would also recommended verifying if SPI or I2C digital communication is preferred as it will help narrow down the selection. The above recommendations are SPI based, while the ADS1219 is an I2C option.

Please let me know if there are additional questions.
