DAC8163: DAC8163 default output under internal ref.

Part Number: DAC8163

Dear team,

Regarding DAC8163 default output after POR,

At datasheet, I can find " At power up, all DAC registers are reset to mid-scale code and the output voltages of all DAC channels are set to VREFIN / 2 volts"

If the customer use internal ref, after power up, we can see DAC output voltage is 0 due to no ref voltage (The internal reference is powered off or down by default)

And then, After internal reference enabled, we can see 2.5V output on VREFIN/out port. Under this status, Is the DAC output voltage 1.25V( VREFIN / 2) or 2.5V output(x2 gain)??

And DAC max input data is 0x7000 or 0x4000??

 Let me know your opinion.

  • Hi,

DAC8163 has internal reference disabled by default. Also at power up all DAC registers are default to mid code and output will according to the transfer function

    (Din/2^n) * Vref * Gain

In internal reference mode, Gain will be 2

So full code output will be 5V and mid code will be 2.5V

DAC data is straight binary max data is 0xFFFF

    Regards,

    AK

  • Hi AK,

    Thank you for your comment.

    one more question.

    At datasheet,

    DIN ranges from 0 to 2 n – 1. In case of DAC8163, 14bit DAC. input range is 0 to 2^14 -1(16383) then max data is 0x3FFF(Decimal, 16383).

    Is it a misunderstanding?

    Let me know your opinion.

    Thank you.

  • Hi,

Yes, you are correct, for 14 bit in hex, max code will be 0x3FFF

What I meant was for 16bit variant of the same. Also make a note, even though DAC8163 is 14bit, DATA_REG is 16 bit with last two bits is don't care.

    Regards,

    AK
