DLP4710EVM-LC: One of the evaluation modules is not working

Part Number: DLP4710EVM-LC
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DLP3010EVM-LC, DLPC3479

Hi Team,

Our customer bought 2 sets of DLP4710EVM-LC in August 2020. The two evaluation modules are working fine then suddenly one is not responding nor can be turned on. Can you please help us diagnose the defect in the evaluation module? The customer said that the power supplies are working fine.

Regards,

Danilo

  • Danilo,

Can you elaborate? What happened between the system working and failing? Was the failing system in question ever operational? If so, what was being done with the system when it failed?

    Regards,

    Philippe

  • Danilo,

In addition to the above questions that Phillipe has asked, can you please ask the customer to update the firmware without pressing the SW21 switch (this will help in case the firmware got corrupted.)

    Regards,

    Mayank

  • Hi Philippe and Mayank,

Here is the response of our customer.

Hello, the module was used for approx 2 months while our team was assembling the setup in which the module was located (now two of the same modules are working there fine). While it was assembling time the module was not working constantly but rather randomly. Once it just didn't turn on. I contacted Digi-Key and informed them about the malfunction. The module was sent to Digi-Key. I was told that they tried to contact you and It would be better that I do it by myself - and we are here. I will ask Digi - Key to either try to update the firmware or to bring the module to me.
    Here is the power supply spec (translated to English): type - impulse; input AC - 110/220 V +/- 15% 50Hz; output DC - 19 V, min 20 A; power min 380 W.

We have bought at first 1x DLP4710EVM-LC and 1 x DLP3010EVM-LC from Digi-Key (August 2020, we started using it at the end of the year), and at the beginning of this year we bought another two DLP4710EVM-LC from CRI Jolanta (working fine).
The DLP4710EVM-LC bought in 2020 by Digi-Key is the one that is the problem.

I understand that the evaluation module is out of warranty. What other diagnostics we could suggest to the customer to confirm if the module is indeed defective?

    Regards,

    Danilo

  • Hello Danilo,

    Thanks for the update.

As I said earlier, the first step would be to try and update the firmware. And if that doesn't work, then I would recommend to go through the system power-up sequence (as mentioned in DLPC3479 datasheet) and try to narrow down on the hardware in order to figure out what is breaking.

    Regards,

    Mayank

  • Hi Mayank,

We just received this update from our customer,

Updating the firmware has not changed anything. Still not working. The evaluation module did not respond during firmware update.
It does not respond to any input and is not seen by the computer while connected via USB nor reacts to input triggers. The only thing showing up is HDMI stats using xrand in Linux, but HDMI isn't working either. LEDs on the board doesn't seem to be lit correctly, it blinks and fades, looks like voltage drops of some sort. The module also doesn't react to pressing the button on the board, it just makes no effect. Based on behaviour it seems it's stuck in some boot loop of some sort.

    Regards,

    Danilo

  • Danilo,

Thanks for the feedback. The flickering LED light does sound like a boot loop. There may for example be a power up interrupt indicating a system failure, or a bad connection somewhere (such as, for example, the DMD). You may want to verify that both the LEDs and DMD connection cables are secure (and reseat them if necessary). Following that you should probably check the critical system signals during power up (see the DLPC3479 datasheet for more information):

    https://www.ti.com/lit/ds/symlink/dlpc3479.pdf

See section 10.2 for the power-up diagram. See if there are any signals behaving incorrectly.

    Regards,

    Philippe

  • Danilo,

Any updates on this issue? For the time being please consult the timing diagram above to diagnose the bootup problem. Please reach out if there is any new information.

    Regards,

    Philippe

  • Hi Philippe,

I have sent a follow up email to our customer and waiting for her feedback.

    Thank you for your support!

  • Hello,

Since there has been no activity for 1 month, I will be closing this thread.

    Thank you,

    Chris

  • Hi Team,

We did not received any response from our customer after several follow up emails. I will now resolved this thread.

Thank you very much for your support!
