DLP4500: Firmware upgrade with LighCrafter

Part Number: DLP4500
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DLPC350,

Hi team,

I received the following question at one of my accounts:

Product: LightCrafter 4500 Evaluation Module (DLP4500, DLPC350)

Scenario: Firmware-Upgrade/Upload with “DLP LightCrafter 4500 Control Software” (DLP® LightCrafterTm 4500 Evaluation Module User's Guide (Rev. F) > Figure 3-13)

Issue:

- Firmware update was stopped during the update process

- Connection using “DLP LightCrafter 4500 Control Software”  no longer possible (button connected with red status indicator und grayed out)

- also in Windows-Device-Manager no USB Composite Device is displayed (after short time of disconnecting the power supply)

- no green LED is flashing on the board.

Questions:
-  is it possible that the LightCrafter 4500 is constantly damaged due to a interrupted firmware update?

- Are there ways to re-upload the firmware to restore the functionality of the board?

- Is it possible to upload the update via other interfaces than USB? If so, which tools would allow this?

thanks in advance,
Jens

  • Hi Jens,

Please ask the following questions to customer to help troubleshoot:

    1. Has the firmware on this EVM been updated before ?
    2. What was the projector doing before this update ?

    Thank you,

    Chris

  • Hi Chris,

    I received the following update:

    1. Yes, the firmware has been updated successfully several times in past, using „DLP LightCrafter 4500 Control Software“

    2. this his not 100% clear, most probably in idle state.

    To summarize the issue:

    - The firmware was updated (there were writings to the memory, the first 128KB = bootloader size were not written) and in the middle of the update process there was an interruption.

    - after that the EVM is no longer recognized by USB and therefore also not by "DLP LightCrafter 4500 Control Software" (connection button greyed-out and red status)

    - flash erased several times according to „DLPU017A DLP LightCrafter 4500 Flash Programming Guide” > Figure 12/13

    - still no USB connection possible (Windows-Device-Manager shows no additional Device „USB Composite Device“) and no connection via „LightCrafter 4500 GUI“

    - after connecting a power supply (and USB connection) the green Status LED 07 is on constantly, the red status LED D16 only for a short time (<1 sec). No additional LEDs on.

    - when the EVM is replaced by a new one with the same setup (same cabling, same PC), everything works fine.

--> Is there a way to fix the EVM that is no longer recognized via USB?
--> Is there a connection between Bootloader and the correct USB behavior?

    thanks,
    Jens

  • Hi Jens,

    Thank you for your information!

We will look into these questions and get back to you by next week.

    Regards,

    Lori

  • Hi Jens,

You can try flashing the EVM using JTAG and the instructions are available in the LCR 4500 EVM Flash Programmers Guide

    Regards,

    Akhil

  • Hi Akhil, Lori,

thanks for your help, I received the following feedback:

"Unfortunately this did not help. According to „DLPU017A DLP LightCrafter 4500 Flash Programming Guide” the Flash was erased multiple times.
So currently weare stuck at  step "Open the DLP LightCrafter 4500 GUI and wait for the device to connect."...

Therefore we were asking whether it is possible to write the Flash via JTAG interface instead of USB. "

So from my perspective the LCR 4500 EVM Flash Programmers Guide describes how the Flash can be erased using JTAG, but for any upload is done by USB?
Could you describe how the Flash can be written via JTAG?

    thanks,
    Jens

  • Hello Jens,

Thank you for the update. We will get back to in couple of days.

    regards,

    Vivek

  • Hi Jens,

If the device is erased completely and not programmed then there isn't any use tryin to connect via GUI since it has been completely erased. So make sure to program via JTAG once you have erased.

Using JTAG, not just erasing you can also program it as shown in below image.

Once programmed you should be able to connect via GUI

    Regards,

    Akhil

  • Hi Akhil,

thank you, this solved the issue!

Can you provide technical details why the EVM is no longer recognized as USB device after the incomplete Firmware Update?
Is an executable main application needed for USB connection?
Feel free to replay via mail if the public forum is not the right place for this.

    thanks,
    Jens

  • Hello Jens,

The DLPC350 controller fails boot if the flash is corrupted  or partially erased.  Since controller is not up and running , it is not able communicate through USB.

    regards,

    Vivek
