DLPLCRC900DEVM: Flickering when one of DMD670s is attached

Genius 9880 points
Part Number: DLPLCRC900DEVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DLPC900, DLP670S,

Hi,

We have received inquiry that there is a problem in their DMD, please see details below.

Half of the DMD is not displaying correctly. There is no error indication, so I don't know what to do? When I attach the DMD 670S half of the mirrors are flickering randomly. Since I have an exact copy of the EVM and both DMDs work fine with other one, I am certain, there is an issue with one of the EVMs.

Could I just send it to TI and have it repaired/replace ?

Regards,
Maynard

  • Hello Maynard,

Please check the flex cable pads on the EVM in question and inspect for debris or contamination and clean the pads if needed with isopropyl alcohol and try the operation again.

Since both DMDs work with the other Dual DLPC900 EVM board, There is clearly some issue at that board.

After that I would try re-flashing the firmware on that board using the OOB image in the DLPR900PROM installation directory for the DLP670S --> [ DLPR900PROM ]

I am not sure what the second image in the post is for.

After trying those two items let us know the result and we can determine the best course of action then.

  • HI Fizix,

Thank you for your response. Please response from customer below.

    "

Ad 1) as suggested i cleaned the pads and checked for dirt on the contats. Unfortunately, this did not remedy the issue.

Ad 2) THE DMD is already running the original : dlp670S_6.0.0_OOB firmware. So already when booting, when only power is supplied without a usb connection, does the diplay error occur.

    "

  • Maynard,

I am wanting them to "re-load" the dlp670S_6.0.0_OOB firmware in case there is some corruption in it.  The controller board is where that firmware is stored.  The DMD is not running it.

Do you know what they mean when they say, "already when booting, when only power is supplied without a USB connection, does the display error occur"?

  • Hi Fizix,

Please see response from customer below.

"I attached the image from the LightCrafter Software. As you can see I have re-loaded the firmware to the controller board, with no improvement on the displayed images.

    About:

" already when booting, when only power is supplied without a USB connection, does the display error occur“:

When power is supplied to the controller board and the DMD is attached to it, the images loaded via firmware will be displayed. The images however are not correctly shown (see attachment 2).

    Thank you.

    Maynard

  • Hello Maynard,

Do we know when the customer purchased this EVM?

At this point it is unclear whether the issue is at the controller board or the DMD board. Please help with the following questions:

    • Do they have only the one DMD EVM board?
      • If they have a second DMD board does it run the second DMD board correctly or does the problem stay with the DLPC900DEVM board?
      • If they have a second DLPC900DEVM board, does the issue stay with the DMD board or the DLPC900DEVM board?

If they do not have a second DMD EVM or DLPLCRC900DEVM, they can contact the distributor they purchased it from and request a replacement, but it would be better to determine where the issue is first.

One final question.  I assume that the left half with the stripes is the correct image (vertical stripes is one of the OOB images).  Is that correct?

  • Hi Fizix,

Customer mentioned that they have an exact copy of the EVM and both DMDs work fine with other one.

    Maynard

  • Maynard,

For clarity, they have two DLPLCRC900DEVMs (controller board) and two DLPLCR67EVMs (DMD board).  Is this correct?

With one DLPLCRC900DEVM both DMDLCR67EVMs work fine, but with the other DLPLCRC900DEVM, neither of the DMDLCR67EVMs work.  Is this correct?

If this is all correct, then it would appear the one DLPLCRC900DEVM is defective and they should request a replacement through the distributor they bought it from.  If it was directly from TI, then they need to use the instructions on this page:
