DLP650TEEVM: How to turn off pixel shifting ?

Part Number: DLP650TEEVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DLP651NE, DLP650TE, DLPC7540EVM, DLPC7540

Hi, is there an easy way to turn off pixel shifting in the said DLP with the 7540EVM GUI? i know the DMD only has 1920x1080 active mirrors (it is now stucked in 4K mode) and I am looking to display a mirror for a pixel using full area of the DMD.

I am able to display 1080p by forcing it but it is not 1:1 pixel to mirror (now the image is 1/4 the size sitting at the left bottom corner). Any insights would be tremendous help. Thank you.

  • Hello Jyun,

The EVM has an IT6807 front end device that takes any resolution.

There should be a command to disable scaling. Please also try 1080P@120Hz as that shouldn’t get scaled.

    Regards,

    Matt

  • Thanks for the suggestions, I agree there should be a command to disable that, the closest configuration that I see is the Display Image Size / Write Source Configuration, in advanced mode of GUI.

However I am unable to write the settings to the board cited error execution failed. I modified the Active Area Pixel Per Line from 3840 to 1920 and vertical numbers accordingly, did not work apparently.

  • Hi Jyun,

OK. I forwarded your info to the team. We will need more time to get a system going in the lab and check things out.

    Regards,

    Matt

  • Hi Jyun,

When you say you are unable to write to the board, is that all the time, or this specific situation?  When you open up the Advanced page, make sure to re-enable communication using the Connection setting.

In the Advanced - General Operation section, if you scroll down almost all the way to the bottom, there is a command "XPR Enable Mode Command".  Selecting 0x2 (XPR should always be turned off) should do what you are requesting.

Please let me know if this works for you.  I am working on getting an EVM setup in my lab so I can duplicate what you are seeing.

  • Hi, I disabled XPR, nothing changed. Here I attached the image of the display. The source is 1920x1080, but it would not switch to 1920 mode.

The image size type(under general Operation) is set to 0x1 Native (same as source size). Did i miss something ?

I guess my question now is , how is the DMD doing a 4k resolution with only 1920 columns x 1080 rows* of micromirrors ? If i read this correctly :

  • Jyun,

I have the EVM setup in my lab now.  The EVM you purchased is a 4K EVM.  As such, the SW treats the display as if it were always 4K.  The only way I've found to use the entire device is to use the 0x0 Fill or 0x2 Manual commands.  The output will need to be 3840x2160.

I tested this with 1080P 60Hz from my PC input and from a pattern generator.

I can't guarantee 1-to-1 pixel mapping as there may be some scaling going on, but it will display the full image on the entire device.

  • Does the 7540 front end board support 1080p 120Hz input? it seems to jump back to 60hz whenever I tried.  also can i install DLP651NE firmware on DLP650TE?

The resolution deterioration and chromatic abberation caused by the "4k gimmick" made the DLP650TE unusable for my applicaiton.

  • Jyun,

According to the DLPC7540EVM, you can use the DLP651NE firmware on the DLPC650TE and the XPR functions will be disabled:

    Gary

  • Thanks Gary, would you point me to the download link? I couldnt seem to find it on the DLP651NE page.

  • Jyun, it is on the DLPC7540 EVM page towards the bottom.

    https://www.ti.com/tool/DLPC7540EVM?keyMatch=&tisearch=search-everything&usecase=hardware

The link is the DLPC7540 Firmware.  It contains all of the 0.47 and 0.65 firmware versions.

However, I have tried the NE firmware on the TE system and see no difference.  It identifies the DMD as a 4K DMD handles it in the same manner as the TE firmware.  But, try it out and see if it performs in a manner you can use.

Meanwhile, I will try to confirm with the SW team.

  • Jyun,

If you input a 1080P image, set "XPR Enable Mode command" to 0x2, and "Display Image Size" to 0x0, it will output the 1080P image with no scaling (and no XPR).

While the Display Area says 3840x2160, you can disregard that for the above settings.
