DLP160AP: Is the DMD device be controlled directly with the MCU.

Hi Experts,

Good day.

Our customer wants to know if the DLP160AP or DLP2010 DMD device be controlled directly with the MCU. I was thinking about a Project where the end result would be the same as the blue reflective pattern in the attached picture, the projector on the floor.

Welcome to the E2E forum and thank you for your interest in DLP® technology!

Does the client not want to use a controller at all in their design? That will not work for either of these chipsets. The controllers can't be removed from the design.

Do they just want an MCU that sends commands to the controller without any human input?

Hello Josel,

The controller for the DLP160AP would be the DLPC3420. For the DLP2010, the controller would be the DLPC3430 or DLPC3435. In either case a DLPC is required to control the DMD and this is done directly.

Using a controller is not a problem, but the controller circuit should be integrated and small in size. And that's why I asked if the DMD can control mipids via the interface.

Hello Josel,

The DLP3420 and DLPC3430 controller size is 7mmx7mm. You should be able ot design a very small footprint driver board for projector. Our customer used this device to integrate projector function is small wearable products and handheld devices like cell phone.

Good day.

The size is indeed small and it certainly fits the project. I would like to use laser light sources and control them based on PWM with current control. so can the DLPA2000 be dropped from the plan and replaced with something that can measure the laser's power consumption and control them? and is there a different power source for the DMD controller and the DMD device?

Hello Josel,

The DLPC3420 and DLP160AP will not work without a DLPA2000 or DLPA2005 power management integrated circuit (PMIC). Both the controller and DMD require a DLP PMIC to properly execute the power-up sequence as well as to maintain operation. The firmware provided for these controller also needs to work with such a PMIC.

Hello Josel,

The PMIC IC is required for reliable operation of DLP chipset. Your options are DLPA2000, DLPA2005 only.
