DLPLCR4500EVM: 3D Scanner Design Help

Part Number: DLPLCR4500EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DLP-ALC-LIGHTCRAFTER-SDK, DLP4500, TIDA-00254, DLP4710EVM-LC, DLP4710, DLPA3005, DLPC3479, DLPC350

Hello E2E Experts,

Good day.

On DLPLCR4500EVM:

  1. If I want to change the camera and projector to increase depth accuracy/resolution, does the evaluation board work with the new projector and camera?
  2. Can I access the source code of DLP-ALC-LIGHTCRAFTER-SDK that goes with the board? I would like to modify them to fit my application.
  3. Can DLP4500 project color patterns?

Regards,

CSC

  • Hi,

Welcome to the E2E forums and thanks for your questions.

Please see the responses to your following questions. Please also refer to the DLPLCR4500EVM user guide.

    https://www.ti.com/lit/pdf/dlpu011

    1. The projector design itself is created by an external company iView Limited please see section 1.2.1 and Table 1.1 for specifications. We only sell and provide support for the specific projector designed by iView to work in conjunction with our chipset. Theoretically you could design or create another projector with different specifications but that is outside the scope of TI support. Yes an external camera is supported and there are accompanying trigger signals please see the user guide.

    2. In the GUI download folder there is a zip file with the source code.

    3. Yes, the DLP4500 projector supports color display and patterns and the light engine contains red, green, and blue LEDs to.

    Thanks,

    Alex Chan

  • Hello Alex,

    Good day.

I introduced the kit and ref design TIDA-00254 to my team and they feel very interested.
I would like to check with you if the SDK going with the board is open-source and if there is no limitation on modifying and using it for commercial purposes. No license?
Also, if we want to scan an area of 2000x2000 with 0.1 mm accuracy and cloud generation time of less than 1s,  which strategies, projectors, and cameras are you recommending?
    Regards,
    CSC
  • Hi CSC,

By SDK if you mean the source code, please note all files contains the following header. There is no license required to use and modifications are allowed however TI is not liable in any way and this copyright notice must remain with all code and files.

Please also keep in mind the TI reference design notice too.

    IMP NOTICE FOR REF DESIGNS.pdf

I would refer to this reference design and document about strategies, projectors, and cameras that are recommended. The following reference design should give a good overview and the tiduc48 (design guide) has more detailed information on setup.

  • Hello Alex,

    Good day.

On TIDA00254 BOM, it looks like the Camera has been discontinued.

Hence, I am planning to use the following camera:
    FLIR Blackfly BFS-U3-16S2C-CS

Can you please help check if there is a compatibility issue with the HW and the SDK and can you also please suggest all the potential replacements for cables and lenses?

I do not feel very confident to use the triggle cables and lens mentioned in the BOM as the camera has been discontinued.
    Regards,
    CSC
  • Hi CSC,

Unfortunately this design has not been updated recently and I am not sure if we plan to anytime soon.

I would recommend reaching out to Flir to see if they have any newer compatible camera and if these newer cameras support the ARM-Linux USB3 drivers as provided.

The following is from the TIDUC48B TI Designs 3D Machine Vision Reference Design Based on AM572x With DLP Structured Light design document. So other cameras can be used.

If there is a compatible camera from Flir, the Flir website should list under accessories gpio cables which provide the compatible trigger cable such as the following. In this case I believe this is the exact same cable from the TIDA00254 BOM.

It looks like there are some newer versions of the Flir Flea 3 line as well that may be upgraded replacements to the older recommended camera modules.

    Thanks,

    Alex Chan

  • Hello Alex,

    Good day.

There seems to be no stock of the DLPLCR4500EVM.

Can you please let me know if you have other options to buy the part?
Or can you please suggest another evaluation module with a similar or better projector that is compatible with the SDK and has a 3d scanner ref design with it?
    Regards,
    CSC
  • Hello CSC,

Please allow us to look into what options may be available for your application.

    Regards,

    Austin

  • Hello CSC,

Currently we are working on getting more DLPLCR4500EVM stocked up and built but it may unfortunately take several months.

Based on your application you can go to the following page and explore other options.

    https://www.ti.com/dlp-chip/3d-scan-machine-vision/overview.html

Alternatively it seems like Mouser will stock the DLPLCR4500EVM in a few months.

    https://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/Texas-Instruments/DLPLCR4500EVM?qs=fi7yB2oewZnRlDxvM%252BBUfQ%3D%3D

Another option may be the DLP4710EVM-LC which is currently available on Mouser.

  • Hello Alex,

    Good day.

I have a few questions about the DLP4710EVM-LC. Could you please help?
    1. How is it compared to the DLPLCR4500EVM?
    2. Is it compatible with the Texas SDK for 3d scanner design: https://www.ti.com/tool/DLP-ALC-LIGHTCRAFTER-SDK
View the TI DLP-ALC-LIGHTCRAFTER-SDK Software development kit (SDK) downloads, description, features and supporting documentation and start designing.
      www.ti.com
    3. Is it compatible with all software presented in the TIDA-00254?
    4. Do you have a 3D scanner reference design with this one?
    5. Can it project color patterns?
    6. Can it project continuous color patterns (not just discrete)?
    7. Do you have a plan to discontinue this board?
    8. Can you please also check the compatibility of  DLP4710EVM-LC with other HW in TIDA-00254 too?

    Regards,

    CSC

  • Hello user,

    Please see the response below:

    1. How is it compared to the DLPLCR4500EVM?

DLP4710EVM-LC and DLPLCR4500EVM have different DMD and controller come with the EVM. The DLP4710EVM-LC includes a DLPA3005 PMIC/LED driver for the DLP4710 DMD and DLPC3479 controller. The resolution of the DLP4710 is 1920 x 1080. The maximum input frame rate is 120Hz.

For more information, I recommend you to review the DLPC4710EVM-LC, DLPC3479, and DLPA3005 product pages for familiar with the chipset.

    2. Is it compatible with the Texas SDK for 3d scanner design: https://www.ti.com/tool/DLP-ALC-LIGHTCRAFTER-SDK

The DLP SDK supports the DLPC350 controller (included in DLPDCR4500EVM), but it's not support DLPC3479 (included in DLP4710EVM-LC).

    3. Is it compatible with all software presented in the TIDA-00254?

No, these software are not compatible. Please refer to the reference design TIDA-080005 for DLP4710EVM-LC, and the available Firmware is shown              in DLPC4710EVM-LC product page.

    4. Do you have a 3D scanner reference design with this one?

Please refer to the reference design TIDA-080005 for DLP4710EVM-LC. The DLP4710ECM-LC can use as 3D scanning application according to your design.

    5. Can it project color patterns?

Yes, the DLP4710EVM-LC support color patterns with RGB.

    6. Can it project continuous color patterns (not just discrete)?

There is pre dark time and post dark time between each pattern displayed. Please refer to DLPC3479 datasheet for details information.

    7. Do you have a plan to discontinue this board?

No, we don't have a plan to discontinue DLP4710-EVM-LC

    8. Can you please also check the compatibility of  DLP4710EVM-LC with other HW in TIDA-00254 too?

Please refer to the reference design TIDA-080005 and EVM user's guide for DLP4710EVM-LC. It includes a header to access Trigger In/out signals for camera capture and other system controls.

  • Hello Lori,

    Good day.

    >> The DLP SDK supports the DLPC350 controller (included in DLPDCR4500EVM), but it's not support DLPC3479 (included in DLP4710EVM-LC).
May I know if you have other similar SDKs for the DLP4710EVM-LC? I am very interested in the SDK's capability of camera-projector calibration, triangulation, and point cloud reconstruction APIs. This would save us lots of development time.
    Regards,
    CSC
  • Hello CSC,

Yes, an API for the 34xx controllers can be found on the DLPC-API page. Please note the User's Guide linked on the same page for instructions on use.
