DLP6500FYE: DLPLCR6500EVM

Part Number: DLP6500FYE
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DLPC900, DLPLCR55EVM, DLP5500, DLPLCR65EVM

Hi,

I own a DLP6500FYE device, which has been functioning correctly for a while. However, it has recently encountered issues. Specifically, I'm unable to upload content to the DMD, and there appears to be a noticeable line pattern on the DMD's surface. In the GUI's status panel, I've observed that the "controller/dmd incompatible" option is marked. I'm uncertain whether this issue stems from a problem with the flex cable or some other hardware component, and I'm uncertain about the appropriate troubleshooting steps to take.

Also, I'm encountering a persistent issue where I cannot change the operating mode of my DLP6500FYE device from Video Mode to any other mode. Whenever I attempt to switch to a different mode, such as pre-stored pattern mode, it consistently reverts back to Video Mode automatically.

I've conducted research and reviewed threads related to this issue, such as the one found at https://e2e.ti.com/support/dlp-products-group/dlp/f/dlp-products-forum/643012/dlplcr6500evm-unable-to-switch-to-pattern-mode-error-invalid-controller-dmd. However, I was unable to determine the final resolution or steps to address this problem from the information provided.

I would greatly appreciate your guidance on the appropriate steps to take at this point to resolve this issue.

  • Hello Takeuchi,

Thank you for reaching out to us. Few suggestions:

    1. I see 'Controller/DMD incompatible' and 'DMD parked' status checked. Kindly share the UART debug logs. This will help us narrow down the cause for this issue.
    2. Have you tried re-programming the flash, with Boothold jumper installed?
    3. "Also, I'm encountering a persistent issue where I cannot change the operating mode of my DLP6500FYE device from Video Mode to any other mode. Whenever I attempt to switch to a different mode, such as pre-stored pattern mode, it consistently reverts back to Video Mode automatically."
Is this behavior seen when the 'Controller/DMD incompatible' flag is checked? Or, is this a different scenario?

    Thank you,

    With regards,
    Aishwarya

  • Yes, I have tried the boothold jumper, I turned the device off, jump the j11 and then tried to upload the firmware. I could successfully upload the firmware (I tried with the firmware that I have downloaded from website). Then after I disconnected the jumper it started to work strange like before. Please tell me if I have done some mistakes in the procedure, so again I will try.The problem that I mentioned about video mode is related to incompatible and error. And about UART log, can you please explain from where should I get this info. Do you mean I should capture the signal of the UART(Tx) or sth.I am really sorry but I am new to this kinds of stuff.

  • Takeuchi,

"Yes, I have tried the boothold jumper, I turned the device off, jump the j11 and then tried to upload the firmware. I could successfully upload the firmware (I tried with the firmware that I have downloaded from website). Then after I disconnected the jumper it started to work strange like before."
This is the right procedure. If the correct flash image(dlp6500_<ver>_OOB.img) upload was successful, this should not be an issue.

I apologize for not being clear regarding UART debug logs.
Debug messages from the FW can be routed through UART output connector (J6 on the Single DLPC900 EVM). You can use any serial emulator like Teraterm to capture these debug prints.

  • Thanks for your reply,
I am really sorry that my response become late.
I needed to buy some converters for the J6 and also a PmodUSBUART.
I have tried some commands, like updating LUT
Uploading the firmware in J11 connected mode
Uploading a firmware like we always do
    and some standby/ reset actions.
I am going to upload the results and I do not know

I did not know how I should(With what action or command) get the log similar to you. So please tell me what should I do?

again sorry for being late, I had some difficulties to buy all the needed connectors and stuff
    thanks for your cooperation

  • Hello again,

This is exactly what is required.

If you look at the debug log, you find an error "DMD comm error at DMD_Power()".
This suggests that there is an issue with the DMD power up. I would suggest to verify the DMD flex cable and also the DMD voltages(VBIAS, VRESET and VOFFSET). Please check Power supply requirements in DLP6500 DMD datasheet.

    Thank you,

    With regards,
    Aishwarya

  • Thanks for your reply.

I'm not sure how to check the flex cable. I attempted to verify whether certain pins on the cable are connected or not. However, there doesn't appear to be a specific correspondence rule between the pins of the flex cable, making it impossible to check all of them.

I did check the Vbias, Vreset, and Voffset:

    1. The voltage difference between Vbias and Vss shows 11mV.
    2. The voltage difference between Vreset and Vss is approximately 3.5mV.
    3. The voltage difference between Voffset and Vss reads as 0 (which is likely the issue).

based on this can u please tell me where do u think the issue is, Is it related to flex cable or ...
and thanks again for your cooperation and quick reply
  • Hello Takeuchi,

Do you have another DLP6500 board? To be certain which component is causing the problem, you can swap out the flex cable and DLP6500 DMD board, one by one.

Have you tried with another 12-V power supply to the system? Can you please check if the controller is generating 1.15, 1.8 and 3.3 V correctly?

Your experiment regarding the DMD voltage rails suggests that the problem is with the power supply to DMD. None of the three voltage rails seem to be right.
Can you please check if the VCC is stable before the VBIAS, VOFFSET, VRESET starts?

Let me know if you have questions.

    Thank you,

    With regards,
    Aishwarya

  • Hi again, and thanks

I checked the VCC and it is stable(3.307V), But  i do not have another DMD. what should i do in this step

  • In addition to checking the VCC on the DMD side(A9,B3 and some others, getting 3.307V), I also find the NetTable of the Flex cable, and tried the connection between almost all of them(I can not say all because there are too many and I may miss some of them). The connections are ok and I do not think that the flex cable is broken(just my impression). Can u please suggest me what should I do? and what are the other possibilities?

  • Takeuchi-san,

I am helping Aishwarya with this.  This does suggest that the DMD is potentially shorted so that is why Aishwarya asked about whether you have a different DMD board. When was this kit purchased?

VCC seems good from what you measured.  When the system is running (even though nothing displays) does the back of the DMD get very hot?

    Fizix

  • Hello,

we bought this device  at September 2020. And no, it does not become hot but maybe a little warm(but not considerable).

Thank you so much and sorry for somewhat late reply, its due to time difference. again thanks

  • Takeuchi-san,

Thank you for confirming that the DMD is not getting hot.  This behavior with the status as you show typically indicates that the DMD has become damaged in some way.  I am sorry for the inconvenience.  the DLP6500FYE can be purchased separately.

It looks like the FW is correct.

With the DMD removed from the socket and the assembly powered up, please check the voltage at at Pin 1 on Jumper J1.  It should be at 3.3 V.  Check the voltages at TP20, TP21, and TP33 on the DMD board.

Power down the board and with the DMD still removed place a jumper on J1 and power the system back up and check TP20, TP21 and TP33 again to see if they have changed.  Let me know the results.

Don't forget to power down and remove the jumper from J1.

    Fizix

  • Fizix-san

    Thanks for your help,

I measured them, First when I measured the J1 on the DMD board(I used A5 as ground)  I got again 3.307.   Then
    TP20 and A5    2.977
    TP21  and A5    0.004
    TP33  and A5    0.011

Then power down and add a jumper between J1 pins on DMD board
     TP20 and A5    8.56
    TP21  and A5    -10.05
    TP33  and A5    16.50

  • Hello again Takeuchi-san,

Thank you for doing this measurement.  The good news is that the PMIC (power management integrated circuit) chip does not appear to be damaged and is capable of setting up voltages.

Unfortunately this points even more toward a DMD that is likely damaged.

I recommend getting a DMD.  The EVM and DMD are both past any warranty period.  Typically with the what you are experiencing replacing the DMD restores operation of the system, but it is not guaranteed.

If it does restore operation, I strongly recommend mounting the Controller EVM and DMD EVM in a way that you do not touch the boards when powered.

Please let me know how we can help further.

  • Hello
    thanks for your reply

Is DMD repairable? can not we send the device to the company and get some repairing services?

Thanks again for all your help

  • Hello again Takeuchi-san,

If the DMD is indeed damaged it is not repairable.  I wish I had better news.

    Fizix

  • Okay, thanks. Sorry but I have one more question, Can we buy DLPLCR55EVM instead and use it with our dlpc900zpc?
the DLP6500BFYE device is not currently available at the retail shop that our university has contract with, so I was wondering if I can buy and use DLPLCR55EVM?

really sorry for all the troubles and my many noob questions,

    best regards

  • Takeuchi-san,

The short answer is yes.  The single DLPC900 EVM can run the DLPLCR55EVM.

The longer answer is that you will need to put the boot hold jumper on the controller EVM and program the DLP5500 firmware before connecting the DLPLCR55EVM,

  • Takeuchi-san

If your local supplier can not provide a DLP6500BYE DMD you also have the option of purchasing directly from TI.com

https://www.ti.com/product/DLP6500FYE#order-quality  There are 26 devices in the TIstore inventory currently

  • Tekeuchi-san,

If you are able to purchase directly from TI, I agree with my colleague.  I think it will cost less and be less reconfiguring on your part since you would only be purchasing the DLP6500BYE DMD and not the DLPLCR65EVM.

    Fizix

  • Dear Ritchey and Fizix,

Thank you so much for all your help.

I should ask whether the university can buy from the TI directly or not. It seems there are some procedures and sth related to having contract and etc when it comes to buy new devices.

    again thank you very much

  • Takeuchi-san,

I am not aware of anything on the TI side that would prevent the university from purchasing directly from TI.  You will need to talk to your university purchasing department to see if they are willing to purchase directly from TI.

  • Hi again

In the end, we bought DLPLCR55EVM_DLP093_REV1. As you have told me for setting up DLPC900 with DLPCR55EVM, we should change the firmware first. So, I have tried to find the DLP5500 firmware to upload it while jumper11 is connected. Unfortunately, I could not find the DLP5500 and appropriate software GUI until now.

Based on the DLPC900 guide(https://www.ti.com/lit/ug/dlpu101c/dlpu101c.pdf?ts=1699246823775&ref_url=https%253A%252F%252Fwww.ti.com%252Ftool%252FDLPLCR55EVM) on page 15

"For DLP5500 DMD operation (DLPLCR55EVM) GUI version 5.2.x and firmware version 6.2.0 or newer is required."

But I could not find this versions, all I can find are the 5.1.x and 5.0 versions and for firmware 6.1/ 6.0. Can you please tell me from where I can find and download those versions.

Thank you for your help and support until now,

    Takeuchi
