DLPC3478: the checkerboard phenomenon

Part Number: DLPC3478
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DLPA2005, , DLP3010

Our projection products have normal working well using DLPC3478+DLPA2005+DLP3010LCFQK.
But only one that domestic customer returned has a question that the product project checkerboard all the time after power-on.
We had to disassemble it and found only the chip of DLP3010LCFQK is unusual. It appears the pattern of checkerboard on the top without power supply and as shown in the following figure.

We have to change the DMD chip many times and this product normal work all. So we question our OEM factory about this product. the record of this Mainboard display that it replaced DMD, and the phenomenon is same as the one that customer returned.

By the way there were 3 pcs in Europe that have the same problem.
we want to know :
1) why the checkerboard phenomenon occur? Now, the DLP3010 chip is destroyed or gets into the special mode?
2) how do we solve this problem?

  • Hello Stephon,

    Welcome to the E2E forum.

If the DMD pattern is not changing from the checkerboard including while removed from a complete DLP system, this suggests that there has been permanent damage to the DMD. There is no special mode that would result in this behavior. The cause of this damage is likely due to poor DMD connection. Common reasons for this phenomenon include a faulty flex cable connecting the DMD, removal of the DMD from a system during run time, or improper handling/storage/use outside of the conditions specified in the DLP3010LC datasheet.

    Regards,
