DLP6500FLQ: DLP6500FLQ Reflection Angle

Part Number: DLP6500FLQ
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DLPC900

The DLP6500FLQ is placed on the x-y axis plane.
If a light source enters from the z-axis direction, how many degrees should the DLP6500FLQ be shifted in the x-, y-, and z-axes to reflect light from the DMD in the z-axis direction as well?

  • Hello Rinto,

From the orientation you describe, the z axis will vertical to the DMD (DMD array normal).  Are you asking how many degrees around the x axis and y axis will the DMD need to be rotated so that the projected angle will return along the illumination angle?

It might be easier with a drawing showing what you are attempting to get at.

Are you planning to use coherent light or broad band illumination?

  • Hello Fizix, thanks for the reply.

I am considering a setup similar to what is shown in the photograph.
In this setup, the DMD is placed on the x-y plane, but this arrangement doesn't allow for the image to be projected straight in the Z direction.
I believe it's necessary to adjust the angle of the DMD so that its image is consistently projected straight along the Z axis.
(I plan to place the projection lens along the Z axis.)

I tried using a coherent (laser) light source, but encountered issues with laser speckle noise, so I am now using an LED light source.

  • Hello again Rinto,

First point is that the first reflection in the TIR prism should cause light to enter at 24 degrees from the DMD normal.  Your image shows the illumination coming in at normal.

Second point is that the TIR prism and the light source will need to be rotated clockwise around the DMD normal by 45 degrees.  Then the out bound chief ray will be normal to the DMD (and therefore your projection optics).  This is because for the DLP6500FLQ (and FYE) the hinge axis is 45 degrees relative to the vertical and horizontal.

Please see the DLP6500FLQ data sheet page 20.  https://www.ti.com/lit/ds/symlink/dlp6500flq.pdf

  • Hello again Fizix,

    Thank you. I'll try it.

  • Hello again Rinto,

Please mark this complete if it works.  If not please feel free to post back and we will see what we can do further.

  • It took time to develop the environment.

The DMD angles seemed to be mostly OK, but other problems arose when we tried to do a final check.

I cannot control the DMD with the GUI.
Even if I press the Nomal mode button, it switches to Standby mode on its own.

This makes it impossible to verify.

  • I repeatedly pressed the RESET and NOMAL mode buttons several times.
Then it went into nomal mode, but the DMD Micromirrors Parked is checked.
    EVM is not activated.

  • Hi ,

May you clarify what you mean by "repeatedly pressed the RESET and NORMAL mode buttons?"

By RESET, do you mean the "Standby" radio button? If so, this button puts the mirrors in a 50/50 state that exercises the mirrors on/off. This is normally used before power off, and lasts about 2 minutes. You will need to wait that duration before attempting to turn back to the normal mode.

If this is not the case, may we know what steps you are taking that lead up to this point from the time you power on your EVM?

    • Does your DMD immediately go into DMD park when you power on? Does your DLPC900 controller EVM show the (1 Hz) blinking LED "heartbeat?"
    • If your DMD does not immediately go into DMD park, does it power up and then go into its pre-stored pattern mode to display the DLP splash images?

Let's get this information before we continue any further.

    Regards,
    Michael Ly

  • Hello, Michael Ly.

It is possible that the damage was caused by not following the power-down procedure correctly.

This seems difficult to resolve on a text basis, so we will send it for repair via the lab.

I will close this session for the time being.

Thank you for your generous support.
