DLPLCR90EVM: Having issues while using DLPLCR90EVM and DLPLCRC900DEVM together. Ref # 190185 # 190188

Part Number: DLPLCR90EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DLPLCRC900DEVM, DLPC900

Hello Team, one of our customer bought DLPLCR90EVM and DLPLCRC900DEVM from us and claims they are not working properly. Before they confirm these parts are defective they want to troubleshoot. Their explanation is following,

 -----------------

I ordered two things, one is DMD DLPLCR90EVM and another is evaluation board DLPLCRC900DEVM. Both are connected using flex cables but when I do, according the user guide, the DMD should light up. it does not happen. However I saw that the evaluation board D5, D11 D12 light up, D7 toggles but D9 does not. Which I missed the last time to notice. I am attaching a video and a picture of the evaluation board, dmd however even if I connect does not light up. I am scared to connect them, as I feel it might damage the evm.

-----------------

Can you please advise how can we troubleshoot this issue?

  • Hello Usman,

The secondary controller is not starting up correctly.  The Primary Controller heartbeat starts running, but the secondary does not as you have noted.

I suggest reprogramming the firmware by installing the BOOThold jumper per the following note on page 57 of the Dual DLPC900 EVM Guide [DLP102B]:

NOTE: it is not required to have the DMD attached to use this procedure.  Once both heartbeats come up you should be able to safely attach the DMD board without issue.  I suggest using the OOB FW images (primary and secondary) in C:\Texas Instruments-DLP\DLPR900PROM-6.2.0\DLPR900PROM-6.2.0\DLPR900PROM-9000-v6.2.0 by default.

WARNING:  DO NOT handle the board(s) especially the controller board while it is powered.

If this works let us know.

  • Hello again Usman,

PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE TRYING THE FIRMWARE UPDATE PROCESS:

My colleague noticed something in your picture that I missed:

You have the secondary controller held in reset so it will never start.  Please remove the jumper and see if both controllers boot (i.e. have a heartbeat).  If so then try connecting the DMD board and it should work.

  • Hello, customer tried this. "Please remove the jumper and see if both controllers boot (i.e. have a heartbeat).  If so then try connecting the DMD board and it should work." and claims the following happened.

The evaluation board worked fine then I connected the dmd and some short circuit happened near the power supply, I could see the fumes. After that I disconnected the dmd and tried again. The evm worked fine. Please see attached picture and video for your reference.

    Kindly advise. Thank you.

  • Hello Usman,

This sounds like there is a problem with the DMD (or the DMD board).  Typically it is the DMD.

When did they purchase this EVM?
