Lifetime

Hi,

whats the lifetime of a DMD (guaranted?), especially the DMD used in the pico kit.

C.

  • Curtis,

I interpret your question as: "What warranty does the DLP1700 carry?" Of course, DLP guarantees its products. However, the specific terms of that warranty are in the "Terms and Conditions' which the customer accepts from the distributor from which the part is purchased. So, you should contact the distributor from whom you will purchase the DLP1700 and ask for the "Terms and Conditions".

Interpreting your question as asking: "How long can I expect the DLP1700 to function?" I can answer it this way: a DMD will remain functional for 1000s of hours of operation when operated within its data sheet specifications.

    Best regard,

    Pascal

Is this rating also applicable to other DLP products? (for example DLP3000). Why this information is not included in DLP datasheet?

    Gaston

  • Hello Gastron,

On the last page of the DLP3000 production data sheet is an important notice that includes, "TI warrants performance of its hardware products to the specifications applicable at the time of sale in accordance with TI's standard warranty.  TI's standard warranty is included in our Standard Terms and Conditions of Sale for Semiconductor Products that is found at: http://www.ti.com/sc/docs/stdterms.htm.

Please understand the functional operation that Pascal refers to can be longer then the warranty period.  In both cases, it is important to operate the device within its data sheet specifications.

    Thanks,

    Eric

Indeed, this is the same statement that appears in the last page of every TI datasheet. However this is not enough (to me). In my opinion I would seek the warranty if I believe I had used a defective product. For a proper operation 'operate the device within its data sheet specifications' I would like to know how long the DLP will function (hours of operation). Pascal's response has been quite accurate so I just wonder why this information has not been included in datasheet.

  • Hello Gaston,

I understand your question.  As with many things we purchase, the overall lifetime is not specified and often depends on several factors.  As you mentioned, only a warranty period to cover defects is specified.  If you can share details of your application and the conditions in which it will operate we may be able to provide additional guidance.

    Thanks, Eric

  • Eric, thanks for your patience. I think I'm beginning to understand. The DLP overall lifetime depends on the application even if the device operates within its data sheet specifications. I suppose it make sense due to, among other factors, the mechanical wear of micromirrors and their use by the end application. Am I right?

    Regards,
    Gaston

  • Hi Gaston,

The overall lifetime can depend on the application, but please also understand not every DMD in the same application will fail at the exact same time.  It is just very hard, if not impossible to keep the different variables, which could effect the overall lifetime, the same from device to device.

Thank you for working with us to resolve your question.

    Regards, Eric
