DLPC7540: scalar function

Hi team,

does the minimum and maximum resolution spec means our controller has a scalar function to fit different resolution to the projector screen customer uses?

    Yes, this controller has an internal scaling function.

    This is somewhat hidden within figure 7.2, within the Function Block Diagram under the Video Processing section.

    Our controllers do have some scaling capability because a chipset could include a single controller to cover multiple resolution sizes of DMDs. So, it depends on the controller as well as application.

    I would note that most of our controllers are very strict of input data parameters. This is why a front-end is very important for a system solution.

    you mean our scalar resolution options is not much enough so we need extra front-end scalar normally?

    For 'input data parameters' I am referring mostly to 'video timing parameters'. The type of data input mostly dictates the voltage parameters but the timing needs to be set properly. Please see section 11.4.1 (Video Timing Parameter Definitions) of the DLPC7540 datasheet for an example. Some controllers utilize FPGAs to split data across multiple controllers and the pixel clocks and other video timing parameters for these solutions need to be precise.

    To explain a little further, the controller receives the input data in an expected and proper format (Vx1 or FPD-LINK, in the DLPC7540 controller case) but the typical video input from a customer is from HDMI. This needs to be converted to Vx1 by a chip that TI does not produce, although we do reference these chips often in our evaluation modules (EVM).

    The scalar, at a maximum, would cover all resolution outputs, but we do not offer this. A controller might be able to be reflashed to a different DMD within it's chipset and scale the resolution to the according DMD. This does not always scale properly and would then require the video timing parameters to be changed to accommodate the proper output resolution.
