DLP650LNIR: Difference Between DLP650LNIR and DLP4500NIR

Part Number: DLP650LNIR
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DLP4500NIR, DLPC410, DLPC350, DLP4500

Tool/software:

1. What is the difference between DLP650LNIR and DLP4500NIR? Is it just a much higher refresh rate? When would it be justified to have that much refresh rate?

2. How do you program commands/patterns for either of these chips? It mentions a FPGA being a possibility for the DLP50LNIR in the docs. I'm just lost on how we get the firmware onto the chips otherwise. We would prefer to use a Raspberry Pi but we're not sure if that's an option.

  • Hello again Nigel,

    1. What is the difference between DLP650LNIR and DLP4500NIR? Is it just a much higher refresh rate? When would it be justified to have that much refresh rate?

    - Size.  The DLP650LNIR has a 0.65" diagonal and the DLP4500NIR has a 0.45" diagonal

    - Resolution.  The DLP650LNIR is 1280 x 800 and the DLP4500NIR is 912 x 1140

    - Array orientation.  The DLP650LNIR is a diagonal array for corner illumination.  The DLP4500NIR is a diamond array for side illumination.

    - Binary  pattern rate.  The DLP650LNIR is capable of 12.5 kHz and the DLP4500NIR is capable of 4 kHz.

This information and other differences can be explored in the data sheets of these DMDs.

    2. How do you program commands/patterns for either of these chips? It mentions a FPGA being a possibility for the DLP50LNIR in the docs. I'm just lost on how we get the firmware onto the chips otherwise. We would prefer to use a Raspberry Pi but we're not sure if that's an option.

Both will require some programming on your part.

The DLP650LNIR uses the DLPC410 controller and will require some VHDL programming, unless you buy a premade board from a design house.

The DLP4500NIR will require use of the DLPC350 ASIC and programming with the associated API.

  • 1. Okay so the DLP650LNIR has a much higher resolution. I think we're leaning towards that depending on how much harder it is to program patterns into it.

    2. It sounds like both chips do not have very much programming support. I saw a forum post on using an Arduino to program the DLPC350. Is that an option for the DLPC410 controller. Is there an alternative controller that allows for easier programming for the DLP650LNIR?

    • What is the software support for either of those options?
    • Would you use the DLPC350 instead for an easier time programming and more TI support? We are hoping to rapidly prototype our product.
    • What does buying a premade board from your design house look like?
      • How much would that affect lead time?

    3. Just to make sure we need just 3 components? We need the PMIC, DLP EVM, and DMD EVM for both those options?

  • Hello Nigel,

    1. Okay so the DLP650LNIR has a much higher resolution. I think we're leaning towards that depending on how much harder it is to program patterns into it.

    - There is not an alternate controller for the DLP650LNIR DMD.  Programming the Apps FPGA on the DLPC410 EVM is not trivial.

    2. It sounds like both chips do not have very much programming support. I saw a forum post on using an Arduino to program the DLPC350. Is that an option for the DLPC410 controller. Is there an alternative controller that allows for easier programming for the DLP650LNIR?

    - What is the software support for either of those options?  I will have to consult with the individual who is familiar with the DLPC350.

    - Would you use the DLPC350 instead for an easier time programming and more TI support? We are hoping to rapidly prototype our product.

Again I will have to consult the engineer familiar with the DLPC350 controller.

    - What does buying a premade board from your design house look like?  Please contact DLi to enquire with them.

     - How much would that affect lead time?   Please contact DLi to enquire with them.

    3. Just to make sure we need just 3 components? We need the PMIC, DLP EVM, and DMD EVM for both those options?

    - Please consult the design resources for the EVM for both of these options.  I do not believe the DLPC410 has a PMIC,  The DLPC350/DLP4500 reference design will have the information you need.
