DLP4710EVM-LC: Vertical Lines Artifacting

Part Number: DLP4710EVM-LC

Tool/software:

Hey guys,

I’ve had this projector for awhile now but unfortunately ran into issues a little back with the fault being the ribbon cable, fortunately I’ve found a working replacement which fixes my issues of booting the projector and having it function. Though my unit displays these vertical lines through it no matter the source, so even on splash screen.

Was looking for insight on what the issue may be and any steps of mitigating the issue.

  • Hello Aydin,

Vertical lines like this indicate that one of the data lines has a poor connection or no connection.  This could also be a problem with the cable.  Likely it just needs to have the cable contacts cleaned.

Could you provide a picture of your projector showing the cables?

  • Hi Aydin,

Thanks for reaching out to us on E2E.

I've assigned this thread to another team member who is familiar with this EVM if you could give us an additional day or two to respond?

Since swapping ribbon cables does not seem to fully work, have you double-checked that there is a good connection and that the ribbon cable is not damaged or bent at a severe angle anywhere? This is just an initial check we can get out of the way quickly while we wait.

Also, what do you mean by you found a working replacement? Did you happen to buy the same cable we used for our EVM? Here is a link  to the design files I found off our product page. This has a BOM that you can view for replacement parts.

    Regards,
    Michael Ly

Edit: It looks like my colleague has already replied, as I hadn't refreshed my page before replying!

  • Hey guys,

Thank you for your swift responses.

I'll attach my two beautifully crafted photos to show the cable connections. As for the replacement ribbon cable, I found one off Aliexpress with the same specs as the provided ribbon cable (albeit a little longer). I'd like to note that the stock ribbon cable I believe also had these vertical lines present towards the end of its life, I think I broke it trying to fix the lines initially. I'm curious this reminds me of a GPU artifacting, could it be like a similar video processing chip or most likely is some data lines with poor contacts.

Here is the cable I bought, it was the 80 pin one, matches exactly same as the provided one which also has 80 pins with the same spacing and width.

  • Hello again Aydin,

The next step is to carefully remove the ribbon cable and use a stereoscope (or similar) to inspect the contacts in the connectors that the cable goes in to at each end.  This is almost certainly a couple of pixel data lines that are making poor contact on one of the LVDS pairs.
