Our 24 bit patterns look distorted when we use them in a sequence on the DLP LightCrafter. What is wrong?

The DLP LightCrafter GUI interface expects inputs in .BMP format. In Pattern Sequence Mode the bit-depth or bits-per-pixel representation should always match to selected bit width.  For example, with 1bpp you can use MSPAINT to store the pattern in monochrome format.  There are also free tools available such as www.irfanview.com that can scale any image to a desired bit depth.

  • What is the method to change 8-bit to n-bit in Irfanview?

I tried the 'Decrease Color Depth' option but it scrambled the palette rather than just reducing the bits used.

Also Photoshop insists on applying some color correction when I save. So far I can only create the BMPs in matlab. This is less than ideal since I must turn my VPN on to use Matlab (need to reach license server), and I must turn the VPN off to use the LightCrafter (GUI cant connect while I'm on VPN). A method to create various bit depth BMPs in Irfanview would be great!

  • James,

You may also want to try ImageMagick http://www.imagemagick.org. It is open source, and available for Windows. The tools are command-line, but they offer every conversion and manipulation known!
