DLP3010EVM-LC: Inquiry on DLPC3478 Internal Pattern Streaming Resolution Requirements and 500×500 DMD Options

Part Number: DLP3010EVM-LC
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DLP3010LC, DLPC3478, DLP2010LC

We are developing an intra-oral structured-light 3D scanner and evaluating the DLPC3478 + DLP3010LC chipset. Our intended illumination patterns are 500×500 pixels.

From the DLPC3478 documentation, it appears that internal pattern streaming mode requires full-resolution pattern frames matching the native DMD resolution (1280×720).

Could you please confirm:

  1. Can we project only a 500 × 500 region of micromirrors by loading a 500 × 500 pattern directly into internal streaming mode, or must patterns always match the full 1280 × 720 DMD resolution ?

  2. If full-resolution patterns are required, does TI offer a DMD/controller chipset that natively supports ~500×500 resolution suitable for an intra-oral scanner application, without requiring pattern padding?

  3. If available, please recommend the closest TI DMD resolution option optimized for compact structured-light dental scanning systems.

  • Hello Udhaya,

Our DMDs almost always come in a standard resolution size - i.e. 1080p, 720p, 4K UHD, WXGA, SVGA, etc. The basic functionally of a DMD is to utilize a mirror that tilts light to (on) and away (off) from a lens to display light for that pixel, we combine many more mirrors and have the native resolution of the DMD, the DLP3010LC DMD has 1280x720 of these mirrors.

The DLPC3478 within Internal Pattern Streaming mode, only 1D patterns are pre-loaded. 1D patterns are simply a single column or row repeated across the DMD for each associated row (horizontal) or column (vertical) patterns.

If you want to work with JUST the 500x500 area this would require at least a 2D pattern (row x column), which is supported in External Pattern Streaming mode. This mode works with a whole frame of data and depends on a Video Front End to give parallel interface as any of the data transfer formats seen in section 7.3.1.3.1.

For a reference of a 3D Scanning system block diagram using Extern Pattern streaming mode you can see the DLPC3478 datasheet section 8.2.1 (Figure 8-1).

If you are still wanting to run with 500 x 500, the External Pattern mode could work, but you would be throwing away data on the other pixels as your source would be transmitting data to the whole DMD.

Unfortunately, the DLP2010LC is an 854 x 480 WVGA resolution and couldn't help with a 500 x 500 but this should be closer to your application. Internal 1D patterns would also be possible (vertical) to produce columns of 480 x  480. Please note that horizontal patterns would still be the whole width 854 pixels.

    Best,

    Aaron
