DLP4500NIR: DMD selection guidance

Dear Support Team,

I’m interested in building a DMD-based optical projection system for laser beam shaping in a laboratory setup and would appreciate your advice on selecting the appropriate hardware.

I’m confused by the different DMD modules, controllers, and development kits listed on your website. Could you please provide guidance on a complete setup that can be ordered and assembled with minimal additional engineering?

Our approximate requirements are:

  • Laser operation at 532 or 700-850 nm
  • High long-term stability and reproducibility
  • External triggering/synchronization with laboratory timing hardware
  • Reliable binary mask projection for scientific use

Could you please advise:

  1. Which DMD platform/chip family would you recommend for this type of application?
  2. Which controller and software package would be most suitable?
  3. What exact components would we need to order for a complete working setup (DMD module, controller, cables, power supply, software, accessories, etc.)?
  4. Is metallic coating available (ideally covering the 532-850 nm range), or only the UV/VIS/NIR ranges listed on the website?

We would ideally like an “out-of-the-box” recommendation for a stable and practical laboratory configuration.

    Thank you for coming to E2E with your question!

    The 532nm range of wavelength is categorized within the visible spectrum while the 850nm range is categorized in the Near Infrared (NIR) ranges.

    The DLP4500 DMD would be our optimal visible spectrum device while the DLP4500NIR DMD would be most optimal at further NIR wavelength.

    I would recommend you utilize the DLP4500 DMD with the DLPC350 - 532nm has 90% mirror-metal reflectivity and 96% window reflectivity, the 700nm to 800nm is close to the same as well.

    There are a few third-party manufacturers that make EVMs for the DLP4500 evaluation - I would reach out to them directly, or utilize our DLPLCR4500EVM.

    Thanks for the suggestion. I have a quick question regarding the window coating. According to the DLP4500 datasheet, the window transmittance is 96% within the 532–700 nm range. Do you by chance have any estimates for the transmittance in the 700–850 nm range for the same VIS DMD coating?

    Alternatively, is there a custom option for this window with no coating? In that case, I would expect a single-pass transmittance of 90–93% over the entire 532–850 nm range.

    Yes, an estimate of transmittance within 700-850 would be above 92%.

    Sorry, we utilize coatings for the application as we specify in the datasheet and those coatings are assembled with the devices during assembly. Unfortunately, these windows should also not be swapped out as the environment within the package should not introduce particulates.

    We unfortunately do not produce a device with this specific 532-850nm range, but as I suggested the DLP4500 DMD should be fine for you to utilize.
