Pixel pulsing

Hello,

I would like to divide the DMD chip into various bundles of pixels, and pulse those pixels so that they are "on" for a short amount of time (downwards of a 5ms pulse).  Can you recommend a software/method to do this?  I would potentially like to pulse the different pixel bundles for different durations and rates.

Anthony

  • Hello Anthony,

This cannot be done on the LightCommander Platform.  The LightCommander only loads full frames.

However the LightCommander can display full binary frames at 5,000 frames per second.  That is a display time of about 200 us.

Are your patterns deterministic or calculated "on the fly"?

If you specifically need to control subsets of pixels, this kind of operation can be done with the Discovery 4100 platform.  For purchasing information please see this link:

This system is much more powerful in terms of speed and lower level control, but does require custom APPS_FPGA programming.  There are sample APPS_FPGA VHDL projects available as a starting point when you purchase a D4100 kit.

    Fizix

  • Hi Fizix,

My patterns are definitively known, and NOT calculated "on the fly."  By displaying "binary" frames, does that imply I can only alternate between two full-frames?  Or can I display a series of different "full-frames"?  If that latter is the case, then I suppose it would be possible to feed the system a series of different frames which would, in effect, "pulse" the correct bundles at the correct time.  Does that sound right?  Thanks again Fizix,

    Anthony

  • Hi Anthony,

Binary frame is the one where each pixel in the frame is represented as either '1' or '0'. So 'every' pixel in the frame will be either 'black' or 'white'. LightCommander(TM) can do a) binary b) 8bit grayscale. In 8bit gray scale each pixel can have a 8bit greyscale value 0x00 to 0xFF.

As my colleague  Fizix mentioned the the lowest level of control in LightCommander(TM) is upto 'binary frame'. You can load and refresh binary frame upto 5KHz.

Now, going back to your earlier question, "I would potentially like to pulse the different pixel bundles for different durations and rates" my point is that you 'will' be able to use LightCommander(TM) if the your requirement on the number of pixel bundle and duration of each works out to be simple.

I have provided a example in below picture, let me know if this could help meeting your requirement.

  • Hi Sanjeev,

Yes, that makes perfect sense.  What software would you recommend for feeding those binary-frames into the light commander (in the method you outlined above)?  Thanks,

    Anthony

  • Hi Anthony,

Once you purchase the kit you will have to register the kit on LogicPD website and then you will be able to download the DLP LightCommander(TM) control software. Using this you can create projects and download the patterns and set the frame rate etc...

    http://www.logicpd.com/products/system-on-modules/dlp-lightcommander-development-kit/

Refer to kit user manual this will explain in detail on project creation and programming patterns.

Let me know if you have any further questions.

    Regards,

    Sanjeev
