Dmd frame refresh speed

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DLP7000, DLP5500

Hi

Ti has many different type of dmd chip

And the Refresh speed , fps , is also different

Some chip have 700 fps , but some other only have 120 .

Can you tell me what make it different ?

(we want know a little about how dmd works inside the chip)

Thank you

Diao

  • Hello Xiaochun,

The internal workings of the DMD are proprietary and are not shared publicly.  However the various chips are built to perform to different specifications.  OEM customers do not want to pay a premium for performance that is not needed for some products and are willing to pay more for performance for products that need higher performance.   Therefore TI builds chips with different performance levels.

Some chips are built that can run at higher clock rates than others.  Also some chips are built with wider data buses than others.  For example, the DLP7000 (0.7" XGA Type A part) has two 16 bit wide busses that can run at up to 400 MHz.  The DLP5500 (0.55" XGA S450 part) has only two 8 bit wide busses that can run up to 200 MHz.

As you can see the DLP7000 has 32 bits @ 400 MHz but the DLP5500 has 16 bits @ 200 MHz so that the DLP7000 has four times the bandwidth of the DLP5500.  A customer will choose the part that has the performance needed.  If your product only needs the performance of a DLP5500 then paying the premium for the speed of a DLP7000 does not make sense.

    I hope this helps.
