Advice regarding purchase of DLP Pico Projector Development Kit 2.0

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am planning to buy a DLP Pico Projector Development Kit 2.0 for using in my project. I would like to know if the projector will be compatible with the system specifications that I plan to use. I will be working on a laptop that has: HDMI port, 15-pin VGA port, Ubuntu 12.04 (Linux 64-bit OS), Screen Resolution (Min - 800x600, Max - 1366x768), Display Card - ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4500 Series.

If any other information is required, I would be glad to provide the same.

  • Vignesh,

Welcome to the DLP & MEMS E2E forum.

First, thank you for your interest in DLP. Could you tell me more of what you are looking at DLP technology for? What is the application domain?

I must inform you that the DLP Pico Kit v2 (based on the DLP1700 DMD) will very soon not be available any longer, and is not recommended for new designs.

May I suggest that you look at the much more capable development kit, the DLP LightCrafter - which is based on the DLP3000 0.3" DMD. Please see http://www.ti.com/tool/dlplightcrafter for more information, and to purchase one.

  • I am working towards developing an augmented reality based product that involves both camera-projector system and robotics. I was planning to implement a few computer vision techniques and robot control programs on a remote desktop or laptop computer, and I needed a projector of small form-factor to just replicate the user interface on the computer. Hence, I was thinking about purchasing the DLP Pico Projector Development Kit 2.0 that has decent projection specs and support for standard interfacing such as HDMI, I2C etc.

I checked out the DLP LightCrafter development kit as you had suggested and found that it is a much better development kit.  However, I am not sure if I will be able to use its features to the fullest, as I was just looking for a good projection system of small size. Moreover, for developing my project's software part, I had been mainly using ROS (Robot Operating System) layered on top of the Linux OS in my laptop.

It will be great if you could offer some suggestions as to how I can make better use of LightCrafter for my project. In case you feel that the DLP Pico Kit v2 would be sufficient, kindly give your comments as to whether it will be compatible with the system specifications I had mentioned in the initial post. If any other information is required, I would be glad to provide the same. One last query: if I place an online order for the DLP Pico Kit v2, approx. how many days it may take to reach India?

Thanks for the prompt response to the initial post.

  • Vignesh,

Since we know that the DLP Pico Kit v2 is now, or will very soon be unavailable, and no longer supported, I can not recommend the Pico Kit v2 for a new project or design.

The DLP LightCrafter is compatible with the system you specified. It is important that your system can support the following video resolutions:

    WVGA: 854 x480
    VGA: 640 x 480
    QGVA: 320 x 240
    Native: 608 x 684

    I believe that it will.

There is a LightCrafter control software GUI which does run on Ubuntu linux, and works with the LightCrafter over USB.

  • Vignesh,

You mentioned that you were not sure that you could utilize all of the capabilities of the DLP LightCrafter. Perhaps you could accomplish your goals using a commercial DLP Pico projector. Have a look at: http://www.dlp.com/pico-projector to see what is available from various manufacturers of DLP Pico projectors.
