Newbie: About programming the media player

Dear all,

Sorry for this newbie-general question, but I need to be sure before buying the development kit.

I am trying to develop a projector that automatically plays on start, in loop mode, a video (whatever codec/format the software can play) in the (mini)SD card.

I know that de LightCrafter kit is expensive just for that, so I want to be sure

If you have any other suggestion or you know any kit that just have the light and drive engine and can be feed by any kind of HDMI port, it would be really appreciated.

Thanks for your attention,

Diego Mellado

  • Diego,

Welcome to the DLP & MEMS E2E forum.

The DLP LightCrafter is a development kit for exploring and developing applications with DLP technology. It does not implement many of the features of a commercially available projector. It will not play video loops. It can be set up to play a slide show loop from uSD card, though.

There are many DLP-based Pico projectors which will do exactly what you request - play video in a loop. i don't know about doing this from startup, though. You would have to check the features of individual models.

Since you are inquiring about the DLP LightCrafter development kit, perhaps you have more in mind. Could you tell what is your goal? If you need other capabilities of the DLP LightCrafter, there are ways to implement video playback, but it requires something like a BeagleBoard or a Panda Board in addition to provide the video codec and playback via HDMI.

  • Hi Pascal!

Thanks a lot for your words. Even though loop play is not difficult to find Ihave been looking for pico projectors with auto play for several month with no results.

Maybe I misread the datasheet of Lightcraft, but attending to page 15 of the dlpu006.pdf there is a multimedia soft in the DLP® LightCrafterTM Software

I work with an artist whose pieces include projectors in small boxes-sculptures. We hace worked with external media players, but since space is limited, we would like to take advantage of integrated media players...but we need auto play :(

I hope this info could help you.

Once again, thanks a lot for your support,

    Diego

  • Diego,

The DVSDK does allow the user to develop their own applications for the DLP LightCrafter. We are currently working towards releasing the DVSDK for the LightCrafter at the end of February. We have had run into a few bumps in the road while bringing up the DVSDK. Specifically there has been some difficulty with the USB/network link between the LCr and the PC GUI. We believe those problems have been resolved, and just need another round of testing to validate them.

Even though the DVSDK comes with the video codec libraries, we have not been able to get them working with the LCr. TI does not intend to support the video codecs for the DVSDK. However, due to the code being Open Source, you or other users are certainly welcome to work on this to address your specific applications. Your success in doing this could be helpful to others, as well.

  • Hi Pascal,

Once agan, thanks for your kind words.

    Just to make it clear:

    - The DVSDK will not be available, at least, until last days of February

    - Even it contains the video codecs, you have not be able to make it work and hope the open source community will find how to integrate it, since TI will no support them.

    Is that correct?

    Best,

    Diego

  • Hi Diego,

Yes. you are right. The DM365 Wiki page might help you in finding some more information.
