Any way to have true black?

Is there any way to have true black with the Lightcrafter?   The "black" I see is still too bright.

  • Tyler,

The difference between the brightest white, and the blackest black is the contrast ratio of a projector. This is dependent upon several factors: 1) DLP DMD characteristics; 2) System optics (illumination and projection) design; 3) Light Engine materials and construction; 4) Light Engine alignment; 5) Ambient lighting conditions

The DLP3000 uses the same DLP technology which is noted for excellent (industry leading) contrast ratio. The light engine supplied with the DLP LIghtCrafter is a well designed and executed Pico projetor light engine - but remember that it is a cost/performance compromise. A specially designed, specified, carefully built - and very expensive - light engine would probably provide a higher contrast ratio.

Have you tried setting both a solid white pattern - then a solid black pattern? Those are available in the LightCrafter GUI under Internal Test Patterns.

  • I have used a solid black test pattern, but unfortunately that is still too bright.  I am using a reflected image, and I can see the scattered light from the micromirrors thus obscuring the background.  I have thought of using layers of filters and setting the image to be very bright.  Perhaps that will get rid of the scattered light while allowing the image I want superimposed through.

Perhaps the LEDs for the projector are just too bright for my application, even when I use the software to dim the LED output.   Maybe I need a dimmer LED output.  Hmmmm....

Thanks again Pascal.  It seems you're always helping me here.
