Unable to connect to DLP Lightcrafter via USB

I have firmware and software package 2.0 from the TI page installed, and when I connect the Lightcrafter to a windows 7 computer via USB, it shows up under network adapters as an RNDIS gadget with a yellow warning. I then attempt to update the driver following the steps outlined in the users guide, which results in a code 10, device cannot start, error. I understand that this was an issue several months ago but was under the impression that it had been resolved with v1.1; is there something I'm forgetting/other things I might try? This device has connected without issue on other windows 7 systems, so I doubt it is a hardware problem.

  • Scott,

Welcome to the DLP & MEMS E2E forum.

    Could you try this:

plug in the LCr and let the RNDIS driver show up in Device Manager

    remove the RNDIS driver

    unplug the LCr

replug the LCr, and let the RNDIS driver install again

If this does not help, let me know. Also, have you tried plugging the LCr into another Win7 computer?

  • Thank you for the prompt response,

I followed the steps you described, plugging in the device, uninstalling the driver in device manager, unplugging, and plugging back in, but it seems to put me back where I started. I should also mention that this device was last used several months ago (before 2.0 was released, as far as I know); could this be an issue (firmware, software mismatch)? I have tried connecting the device (with 2.0 software) to a Mac OSX system, which resulted in a 'firmware mismatch' error for DM365 and a prompt to do some sort of update. I will attempt to connect to another windows 7 system shortly.

  • Scott,

I will check here to see what else to recommend.

Meanwhile, here is a thread about using the new firmware on an older LightCrafter: http://e2e.ti.com/support/dlp__mems_micro-electro-mechanical_systems/f/850/t/266837.aspx

  • Scott,

I have checked with the team here. The update to the firmware should NOT have changed anything in the USB / RNDIS connection.

  • Pascal,

I have checked the LCr and confirmed that it is running v1.0, while I have software v2.0 running on the desktop. I have attempted to connect both this device and another, slightly older but identical device to two different windows machines to no avail. The only thing I have noticed is that when one of the devices (both have been used before) was connected, it appeared under network devices with no warning briefly, but the automatic driver install resulted in the return of a yellow warning. In another instance the device appeared briefly under 'other' (as it should, according to the user guide) before reverting back to network devices with a yellow flag.

Update: Here is the error I have received 'DM365 Firmware version mismatch. please update to v4.0 by downloading "DLP Lightcrafter Firmware and software package" 2.0 (link)'. It seems that I will need to do the firmware update (SD card) to have it work with the newest GUI

  • Scott,

The GUI version running on the desktop has no effect on the correct initialization of the RNDIS driver. The USB/RNDIS driver initialization is handled entirely by the OS.

The yellow flag may be alerting you that there is a conflict in IP addresses. The default address for the LightCrafter is 192.168.1.100. If there is already a device on the network assigned that address, there will be a conflict. I don't know for sure that this is the problem you are experiencing, but it is a possibility.

The fact that you are seeing this on more than one computer is worrisome. Have you tried another USB cable?

Is the LightCrafter booting up completely - all the way to the vertical color bars on black background?

Do you have a serial cable (USB to serial - 115000, 8, 1, 0) that you can check the bootup with a terminal?

  • Pascal,

The device is booting properly all the way to the colored bars, and allows me to switch between test patterns with the appropriate button. I have had another individual (who had both this and another LCr running without issue on several computers, including two windows 7 machines) attempt to run the device as he had before, but none of his systems could recognize the device (showed up as unrecognized under USB devices) even after switching USB cables, ports, and hubs multiple times; attempts to connect yielded a 'code 43' error. I will look for any possible issue with the IP address of the device. Is there some way to perform a 'factory reset' of the device?

  • I am looking for more suggestions to help with this.

  • Pascal,

Another potential issue. A few times during my initial connections, I powered off the device by simply unplugging it from its power supply, rather than using the on/off button (I was testing different USB ports and wanted to reset the device). While I am fairly certain that this did not occur during bootup (only after the test pattern), I cannot be sure. Again, the device is booting normally, and all LEDs on the device are the right color (green, green and changing red/green) based on what I have read in the forums.

  • Scott,

Seems that LightCrafter is not able to enumerate properly. Can you please load a USB Traffic Sniffer tool to see the USB transactions and post that back. Here are a couple:

    Best regards,

  • Pedro,

I ran USBlyzer while attempting to update the driver and this is what showed up

This may not be very useful to you; is there something specific you need from the output?

  • I will attempt the firmware update first thing next week; do you think this might solve the problem?

  • Scott,

The screen capture shows that it failed to enumerate. It could not get the full descriptor information. I would suggest to try to reflash the DM365 firmware since it is not able to complete the first part of USB enumeration. Try also booting from SD card with the DM365 firmware, as well as, reflashing NAND.

    Best regards,

      Pedro

  • The firmware update has fixed the problem; I am able to connect, run through test patterns, and use the GUI as intended. Thanks for all your help.
