7 pico devkits, 25% of pixels suddenly failing on each

Hi there,

I have 7 pico devkits which have seen occasional use on projects. Two have been in fairly active use, and the others have been in a box for six months.

Recently I noticed that about 25% of the pixels in one of the kits have gone dead. I swapped the unit with one of my spares (that's why I have them), only to discover that all but one of the units have exactly the same issue.

  • The dead pixels show as black in the "DLP" splash screen when the pico is powered on, with no video connection.
  • The dead pixels (about 25% of the total pixels) are pretty evenly distributed over the frame, giving it a "grainy" look, and making it useless for my applications.
  • The units which were not in use failed just like the one which is in use.
  • Total "on" time for the spare ones in the box are less than 20 hours.
What can be done? Is this a common failure? My pico-related projects are at a standstill until I decide what to replace these with.
Thanks very much for your time,
- ej
  • Eric,

My name is Pascal and I work in our DLP applications group.  Thank you for using the E2E community to reach out to us.  We are disappointed to hear of the troubles you’ve experienced on our Pico Kit product.  TI strives for high level quality in all the products they ship so are concerned anytime a customer reports an issue.

Could you please send a number or email that we can contact you on to better understand the specific use case for your project and how we can more directly assist you?  If you are not comfortable with giving this personal information on this forum, please send me a "Friend" request so that we can take the discussion private.

  • Hi Pascal,

Thanks for your quick response! The best email to reach me at is ej@machinelevel.com.

I've done several pico-based projects in the past, but the one I'm working on now is by far the most interesting. I think you'll enjoy it, and I greatly appreciate any help you can offer on this issue.

I look forward to talking with you,
