Is the Optical Engine included with the DLP 2010 EVM suitable for a near eye display? If so, can you provide some guidelines on size, appropriate distance from eye and safety considerations?
Thanks,
Sanjay

Hi Sanjay,
The OE that comes with DLP 2010 EVM is not suitable for near eye display.
Size of the optical engine used in the DLP® LightCrafter Display are as below:
Length 31 mm
Width 32 mm
Height 12.5 mm
Total volume of the optical engine is: 4-6 cc
Weight of the optical engine: 15 gram.

Hi Sanjay,
The TI DLP Pico chip set is capable of doing NED, but this particular 2010EVM with .2 wVGA optics is not designed for NED.
TI DLP doesn't design OE, but we supply IC for different applications, including NED.
Customers can use .2 wVGA DMD or .3 720p DMD + DLPC3430 + DLPA2000 to make a NED.
A company called "Avegant" http://avegant.com/ used the DLP Pico chip I mentioned above to make a pretty good NED. You can now pre-order the NED.

Hi Sanjay,
I recommend browsing the DLP Design Network: http://www.ti.com/lsds/ti/analog/dlp/solutions-services.page
You can find a 3rd party that can help with optical design. As of today, DLP near eye display customers are developing their own custom optics, so unfortunately there aren't any "off the shelf" modules similar to traditional projection modules.

I know this post is about a year old, but I have a relevant question.
I purchased the lightcrafter 2010EVM with the intent of using it to design a prototype near eye display. The module arrived today and I didn't see this post before.
Why is the 2010EVM not suitable for a NED?
Thanks,
Hannah
Hi Hannah,
Please let me make it a little clear. The 2010 chipset (DMD, 2010 Controller, DLPA2000) is suitable for NED, but the design of this EVM is not intended for NED.
First, the optical engine is not intended for NED, it's designed for project on the wall instead of in your eye. The PCB itself is way too big and LED current is too big for NED.
Again, 2010EVM is not suitable for NED, but chipset does. You have to make NED display PCB small with low current and NED display optical engine.
