dlp maintenance

Some of you may be familiar with the "stuck mirror" failure of some dlp chips used in various TV models from various manufacturers. I am about to replace the dlp chip in my Samsung 1080P LED TV receiver. Currently, the picture looks like the Milky Way galaxy. These dlp TVs produce some of the best picture quality, color rendering and contrast ratios and so owners should be reluctant to give up on these receivers.

The replacement of the dlp chip can be carried out by the owner with moderate skills and a screwdriver. I have two questions;

1- Is there a known root cause for these failures (I suspect heat).

2- Can the mirror side of the chip be cleaned with alcohol to remove dust, dirt?

Thank you for your replies.

  • Hello Dennis,

    Thank you posting on TI's E2E forum. The following application note addresses your question about cleaning the DLP chip window (the actual mirrors cannot be accessed). Please read: http://www.ti.com/lit/an/dlpa025/dlpa025.pdf.

    Regarding your other question, please understand, the respective TV OEM would be the source for any statement on why their end equipment preforms a certain way.

    Thank you for understanding and Happy New Year.

    Eric
