Image Display ERROR with Development Kit

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DLPA200

Dear Ti community,

I use my Ti DMD development kit  D4000 EXPLORER for a while:

1-Since a couple of days, When I load and reset a white image, the displayed image has large horizontal stripes (about 10) with poor contrast.

2- Even when I switch off the KIT, the image remains on the DMD. I tried to use the "float mirrors" command, but nothing happens and the problem remains.

3- Sometime dots resembling a withe noise appear of the DMD.

Do anyone have already had this issue? Any comment would be welcome.

Thanks,

Remi

  • Hello Remi,

This sounds like a mirror clocking pulse (sometime called a mirror reset) issue.

Please carefully probe the V_bias_rail, V_reset_rail, and V_offset_rail signals at the DLPA200 (formerly called DAD2000) with a DMM (digital multi-meter) to see if they are correctly generating +26, -26, & +7.5 V respectively.

If so then with a scope carefully probe the MBRST[0:15] lines with scope.  The waveforms should all have the same form and relative timing of the edges.

If both of these are correct then please answer the following:

Have the mirrors been operated in one state for very long periods of time?

If so have they at least received periodic mirror clocking pulses even if the data is unchanged?

Please let us know the results.

  • Dear Fizix,

We have indeed operated the mirrors for very long period of time using a single image (maybe for about 10 hours).
The residue I notice today indeed resembles this image.
I have "load and reset" the image and then run. I do not know whether the kit received periodic mirror clocking pulses, though the image seems to be "load and reset" at every loop of the run.
I tried to "float" the mirror within the loop but it changed nothing.

Do you think the residue can be fixed ?
    Thanks,
    Remi
  • Dear Remi,Could you tell me which DMD you are using with the kit?
Also please make and run a small script that loads "all on" followed by "all off" with no delays. Run this continuously for about 48 - 72 hours and see if it recovers or paritally recovers.
  • Dear

I run the DMD with all on and all off images without delay for 72 hours.

The result is far worse, the DMD looks like a white noise and the display image in hardly visible know.

the kit includes a XGA DMD (1024x768 pixel) and the software Discovery 4000 Explorer

Is there any way to recover the kit? I notice that the DMD chip can not be replaced on the DMD borad, isn't it ?

Thank you very much for your assistance,

    Remi

  • Dear Remi,

Regrettably the DMD will need to be replaced and is no longer made by TI. You may want to contact DLi to see if they still have any of this particular DMD that they can sell you

The mount for this DMD requires very careful removal so as not to damage the socket.  I believe it is a "LIF" (low insertions force) socket and requires working the DMD out slowly by gently prying a little at a time and alternating from side to side until it comes out, but there are no guarantees.
