DLP 4500 Cannot Connect, Won't Boot, Can't Upload Firmware

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DLPC350

Just the other day my Lightcrafter 4500 stopped working. It was being used as it is normally used so it was unusual.

The first thing that happened was that on reset it would not project any light, so it seemed it did not boot up. I disconnected the power and plugged it back in. No light. I noticed that the fan was running, there was no LED lit up on top of the board but LED green on bottom of board.

I read a post that suggested placing a jumper on pin J18 to force into programming mode. I took jumper J12 which was not being used. When I removed J12 jumper (I did not plug the jumper into J18 yet) and powered back up. This time the splash screen was displayed on bootup but never went beyond the splash screen and still the USB was not recognized so the GUI could not connect.

I powered down, plugged in the jumper on J18 and powered back up, no splash screen displayed. I launched the GUI, went to firmware tab and tried to upload firmware. Below is the message I now receive.

"Unable to enter Programming mode"

Any thoughts on how to revive the board?

Thank you,

Cole

  • Hello Cole,

The Qt Application GUI has a hardcoded time out after which it proceeds further to communicate with DLPC350.

    Do one more thing -

Remove the power and reapply the power with J18 jumper put. Now launch GUI. Look at the PC device manager and ensure the device manager recognized the device as DLPC350. Sometimes we have seen the usb driver corrupted, for this without connecting to the Hardware goto driver and manually unistall it. And then connect to hardware to ensure the driver is installed freshly.

With J18 installed, DLPC350 runs bootloader program, it just allows you to communicate with the flash where you can erase and program the flash, if the bootloader was intact in the flash you will be accomplish this. if it doesn't work you need to do JTAG flash  refer to this thread http://e2e.ti.com/support/dlp__mems_micro-electro-mechanical_systems/f/924/t/311452

  • I do not think this is a USB driver issue -- the board clearly is not booting up correctly if there is no projection showing the expected splash screen or any LEDs lighting up on top of the board.

UPDATE: If I leave the Lightcrafter 4500 sit for 24 hours not plugged in and come back and plug it in it will boot up. When it did boot up the first thing I did was re-upload the latest firmware -- with "success" message from GUI. This seems to not have done much of anything as I still get the same behavior.

    Any ideas?

    Thank you,

    Cole

  • Hi Cole,

After uploading the latest firmware, a) are you still having the USB connection problem with the GUI if not then can you double check the device manager and verify the DLPC350 device is dected? b) Are you still seeing the no splash screen or LEDs on issue after firmware update?

To debug further you need to open the engine and cross check if the image appear on the DMD, you can leave the DMD connected to the controller board this will at least show the controller board to DMD is working fine, then we can debug on USB driver detection and communication, after this we can look at the LED enable signals going to the LED driver.
