For 3D Scanner: The DLP LightCrafter 4500 at step4-6 can't project any patterns.

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TIDA-00254, DLPC350

Dear Mr./Ms.,

I have some questions about the "3D_Scanner_LCr4500_PGcam.exe". I do the procedrue based on "TIDA-00254: Accurate Point Cloud Generation for 3D Machine Vision Applications using DLP® Technology and Industrial Camera".

Firstly, I have installed  the corresponding softwares, including "Point Grey FlyCapture® v2.6.3.4 SDK", "MeshLab v1.3.3", "3D Machine Vision Reference Design", "DLPLCR4500GUI-2.0.0"......

Secondly, I conncet the PC, DLP and Camera:

       Thirdly , I run the 3D_Scanner_LCr4500_PGcam.

It's ok at step 1(Camera Calibration Board Generation).

At step 4 (Camera Calibration Procedure) the Point Grey Flea3 camera can capture the figures of calibration board. But  the DLP LightCrafter 4500 can't project a Solid Field ,even any patterns.

Then the steps 2-3 (Projector Preparation)sometimes are ok, but sometimes I must  restart the 3D_Scanner_LCr4500_PGcam to run the steps 2-3, or after step2 It will like this:

At  the step5 (Projector and System Calibration Procedure),  the DLP LightCrafter 4500 can't project a  checkerboard, when the camera capture the pictures of the camera calibration board it will like :

Lastly, I think the projector hasn't get a a trigger from the camera so that It can't project patterns. But I don't kown how to do.

It will be very grateful if anyone give me some suggestions!

Best regards,

Yu Peng.

  • Hello Peng,

The exe attempts to connect to LightCrafter 4500 Kit, and it is failing?

If you have kept the LightCrafter 4500 GUI open, the connection to 3D scanner exe not work.

Also to make sure, close your exe and check you are able to communicate with the Kit via GUI, if it works, then close the GUI and then run the 3D scanner exe.

    Regards,
    Sanjeev
  • Hi Sanjeev,

You are right that "kept the LightCrafter 4500 GUI open, the connection to3D scanner exe not work". Therefore I just open them respectively, so it does not matter this.

I am referring to the steps in  http://www.ti.com/lit/ug/dlpu019/dlpu019.pdf Section 3.2 Camera Calibration Procedure and Section 3.4 Projector and System Calibration procedure.

1、At the step Section 3.2, the  Command Line show "projecting white pattern to illuminate calibration board" as labeled red in the follow picture. However, the projector does not cast a white pattern as the next picture,

2、 It's similar to the Section 3.4 that there is not Checkerboard casted by the projector.

3、I connect the camera,DLP,and PC  based on  http://www.ti.com/lit/ug/dlpu019/dlpu019.pdf and www.ti.com.cn/.../tidu457a.pdf:

         The actual connections :

4、At Section 3.3 Projector Preparation after I enter command "2", there are two ".bmp" pictures and one ".bin" file generated under the root: E:\ti\3D_Scanner_LCr4500_PGcam\3D_Scanner_LCr4500_PGcam.

             The two pictures are:

I think it's a bug for the procedure because the pictures are useless and It has not  been refered to generate them in the references. But when I run the step "2",they can be added to the DLPC350 firmware and displayed for 5 seconds at the end of this step(labeled red):

         Thanks a lot!

    Best regards,

    Yu Peng.

  •           Otherwise,I can do camera calibration procedure although the projector doesn't cast white pattern, and a camera calibration data will generate under document "config"(E:\ti\3D_Scanner_LCr4500_PGcam\3D_Scanner_LCr4500_PGcam\config).

But there is not  a projector calibration data generating because Projector and System Calibration Procedure is failling. So I want to skip Section 3.4 by fakeing a projector calibration data like:

Then I enter "6" in the command to scan a object, the procedure can run and capture 46 pictures. But It prompts "Not enough images. Scans may have too dark. Please rescan." Actualy,  no matter how  luminous the backdrop is, the problem always exists after rescaning.
