What is the difference between a pattern and an image?

This is probably a dumb question, but I get confused with the terms "pattern" and "image".

We are working with the LightCrafter 6500 EVM and the GUI control SW, mainly in pattern-on-the-fly mode. We like to transfer bitmaps and control their exposure using the command interface. In POTF mode, patterns are somehow associated to bitmap images, whereas in VP (video pattern) mode, patterns look quite different, like a RGB raster. So, a pattern doesn't seem to be an image...

Could someone please point out the difference between the two denominations to a non-native speaker who, as well, is not an expert in image processing? Additional readings, links, etc. appreciated. Thank you.

Robert

  • Hi Robert,

It is not a dumb question, those terms can definitely be confusing. They are often used interchangeably, but they will (hopefully) usually come with qualifiers in our documentation, for example, 1-bit pattern or 24-bit image.

Some people consider there to be a distinction between image and pattern. They generally think pattern is used to mean a (1-bit) monochrome bitmap, and image is used to mean a 24-bit bitmap or an 8-bit gray scale bitmap. So, in some people's definition, patterns make up an image. But you often have to read for context to know for sure.

We are always looking to improve our documentation and resources, so if something you come across about images or patterns is ever unclear, just let us know and we can help clarify it!

    Best regards,
    Trevor
