Is it safe to directly connect the dmd to the controller board without the flex cable?

We use a DLP LC 4500 EVM as an amplitude mask for our laser (light engine removed, what's left is the controller board and the dmd). We find the flex cable to be short for stable optical mounting, so I'm thinking if we can just plug the DMD directly to the controller board, avoiding the flex cable and just mount the whole board to a plate vertically for our optics setup.

Anyone tried this before?

  • Hi Eli,

Let's wait for other to respond.

As you might be already aware, you need the board modifications as current board has connect option for flat panel cable. One caution, any board modification void warranty.

  • Hi Sanjeev,

Do you mean that if we connect DMD and the controller board directly without the flex cable the DMD will still work properly? As warranty is not we are concerned with.

PS: Is there a longer flex cable or a flex cable that the two connectors of which are in different sides ?

    Best regards
  • Hi,

Certainly, you should be able to connect the DMD without the flex cable in b/w.

For longer flex cable, you can touch base with our Design House partners, www.ti.com/.../solutions-services.page

  • Hi Eli,

I am curious if you have been able to safely run DMD without the cable in between. We use same EVM while light engine is removed, but recently the cable got a problem (we have two DLP LCR 4500 EVMs and I by exchanging DMDs and flex cables I could confirm that one of our flex cables is damaged...). Now we are in hurry and if direct connection of DMD to board is OK we can (at least temporarily solve the problem).
