Lightcrafter 6500 Controller/DMD Incompatible

Our new Lightcrafter 6500 appears to have an "out of the box" problem.

1) I don't see an "splash screen" image with just power applied.  Should I?

2) LEDs D8 & D9 are on steady, D6 is flashing.

3) When I connect via USB I get find the "Controller/DMD Incompatible" box checked.

How should I proceed?

  • Hi Bill,

I'm moving your post to our forum where we are currently discussing LightCrafter6500 topics.

    Thanks,
    Clinton
  • Hi Bill,

I'm sorry you are experiencing an issue with your LightCrafter 6500. I have a few questions:
    1) When (roughly) did you purchase/receive your LightCrafter 6500?
    2) Can you attach a picture of the EVM (showing both the controller board and the DMD board)?
    3) I am guessing the green "Connected" light is lit up in the upper left corner of the GUI, am I correct?

    Best regards,
    Trevor

  • In response to your questions:

    1) Our PO to Digikey was issued 6/8/15, we received the Lightcrafter 6500 6/24/15.  The date code on the package appears to be 12/19/14.

    Package label

    2) Here are pictures:

Mounted for use in our system.

    3) Yes, the green connected light is on when connected and off when disconnected.

    Hope this helps.

  • Bill,

From your pictures, it definitely looks like a DLP6500 DMD and controller board.

It is possible that the firmware was somehow corrupted, so try re-loading the firmware on the board and see if that fixes the problem.

The LightCrafter 6500 and 9000 User's Guide should be able to walk you through that process. Let me know if new firmware (make sure you are using version 2.0 -or later for future readers) corrects the issue. You should see default splash images on the DMD at startup.

    Best regards,

    Trevor

  • I am not finding the instructions to update FLASH. The information I find in the user's guide section 3.9 appears to deal with patterns. The only information that appears to deal with completely re-programing FLASH is in sections 3.10 and 3.11 using JTAG and appears deep and complicated. Is that what I need to do?
  • Hi William,

Did you manage to solve your problem ? I have encountered the same one and I am not sure what to do. If you have any tips please post them.

    Regards,
    Grzegorz
  • No.  I haven't been able to understand how to reprogram FLASH.  Been waiting for a response.

    Bill

  • Hi Bill and Grzegorz,

I apologize for the delay, the firmware (PROM) can be downloaded here. To update the firmware, go to the GUI Firmware tab, browse to find the LightCrafter 6500 firmware .img file, then click upload.

If you wish to alter the firmware in the future (add images stored in flash, set a start up state, add a batch file, etc.), you would alter this process by browsing for a base firmware and then using the panel on the right of the firmware tab to make changes. After you have chosen the settings you want, click Update Firmware, and a new firmware file will be created. Then browse for that new, altered firmware file, and click Upload.

Please let me know if you have any questions!

    Best regards,

    Trevor

  • Reprogrammed FLASH and cycled power and still get the following results

and no sign of an image.

    What next?

    Bill

  • Sorry, I didn't get the image loaded.

  • Hi Bill,

I wanted to let you know that I am investigating your problem further.
In the meantime, can you send me the voltage and current specifications on your power supply?

    Thanks,
    Trevor
  • Power supply is an I.T.E. Power Supply model CENB1060A1203F01  output +12 Vdc, 5.0 Amps (Digikey 271-2718-ND) as recommended in the documentation.

My voltmeter reports the operating supply voltage of 12.067 Volts, a current draw of 211 mA.

Power on transient as shown. Trace 1 supply voltage, 2 V/div, trace 2 supply current 100 mV/Amp.

I also ran the unit from my Agilent E3649A lab supply with similar results.

  • Hi Bill,

Everything seems to check out correctly on your EVM and your power supply, thank you for your thorough replies.

I think it's possible that the tight "S" bend you have on your flex cable could have caused some damage. Can you inspect your flex cable and let me know if you see any signs of damage on it?

    Best regards,
    Trevor
  • Hi guys,

I read your discussion today, since I had no access to computer for a couple of days, and my situation is the same as Bill's. I uploaded the firmware as Trevor suggested, however it brought no results to the display. I use a 12V 5A power supply, as suggested in the guide. As for the flex cable I do not see any damage on it. In fact the problem started before I mounted the device - on a straight cable.

  • Hello Grzegorz,
I have sent you an E2E friend request, please accept this and I will be in contact to discuss the issue you are seeing in more detail.
    Thanks,
    Trevor
  • Hello,

I am having the same issue. Uploading a fresh copy of the firmware and power cycling did not work for me either. Did anyone ever find a solution to this?

    Thanks,
    Rebecca

  • Hi Trevor,
I'm having the same issue as well. I have sent you a E2E friend request yesterday with details of my issue. I found this discussion today, and my issue is simular to what the others experience. As Rebecca I would like to know if any solution is found, and if it is a problem with the new version of firmware or if there already was problems with the older versions?

    Thanks,
    Jakob
  • Hello Rebecca,

I have sent you an E2E friend request. Please accept this so I can learn about the exact details of the issue you are seeing in a private message.

    Thanks,
    Trevor
  • Hi Jakob,

Thanks for your message and for reaching out to me. I will reply to your message shortly.

    Best regards,
    Trevor
  • Dear Trevor,

I have recently encountered the same problems as discussed in this thread and performed the suggestions in order to fix them. It seems that you directly messaged the people here via E2E friend request to solve their problems and there was no solution posted publicly. I was hoping you could provide me with some assistance as well. I have sent you a E2E request so we can further discuss. Thank you for your time.

    Regards,

    Gary
  • Hi Gary,

I sent you an E2E message to debug your issue. As this thread is getting older and contains a few issues with multiple causes, I'm going to close it off to prevent confusion. If anyone has a similar question, feel free to create a fresh post in this forum.

    Thanks,
    Trevor
