The largest size DMD (the chipest of DLP) Texas Instruments can supply???

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DLP9000

I have checked the Product list and find the maximum DMD size is 2560*1600. It is not enough for us. I want bigger one. However, I contacted some other companies who produce Projectors. They told me that they buy DMD inside the Projector from Texas Instruments. And the size of DMD they buy from Texas Instrument is 4096 x 2160.

why cannot I find them on the public product list?

do they customize that size or though some other ways to get such big DMD from Texas?

  • Hi Zhicheng Ren,

Welcome to the DLP & MEMS E2E forum!

On the Product List, the maximum DMD size shown is 2560*1600.  The 4096 x 2160 DMD is one of TI DLP Cinema® products, and some information is available here

At the moment this premium 4096 x 2160 DMD is available for professional venue projector manufacturers (for the Cinema industry, for instance).

TI does not offer customized DMD chips. We would be glad to learn about your needs and opportunity, and if needed we can help you to choose the right product.

  • Hallo,

    Thanks for your reply.
In fact, we want to use the DMD and it's drivers only as a component of our equipment. What we really need is to illuminate the DMD with our own illumination light source. With the help of Drivers, we can load the binary patterns on the DMD. When the DMD is illuminated, the light will be modulated by the DMD and carry the patterns we loaded. then the image will be demagnified with relay lens to an image of 20mm x20mm area. it is a small area. we don't need to project the image on a very big screen like the cinema. we just need a image of 2cmx2cm. However, we need quite precise controll of details within the image, so we need the size of DMD to be as high as possible. Only with high enough size of DMD (I mean the number of pixels), can we make more precisely modulation to the light within the 2cm*2cm area after magnification or demagnification to the DMD image.
That is why we are very interested in the 4096 x 2160 DMD, it seems that it is the maximum size in the market. But I am not sure if this size is real 4096 x 2160 pixels or it is implemented through some other technology instead of true 4096x 2160?
    Look forward,

    Regards,

  • Hi Zhicheng Ren,

Yes, the 4096 x 2160 DMD has all 4096 x 2160 pixels. This is an OEM device that is not available except through some OEMs for professional venue projector manufacturers (for the Cinema industry, for instance).

The DLP Product Brochure contains the list of DLP chipset available for developers, and that we are able to directly supply and support.

We recommend the DLP9000, that is the highest resolution (2560 x 1600) DMD size available for developers. The DLP LightCrafter 9000 is the EVM associated to this DLP9000 DMD.

Thanks for your interest in the DLP technology and for sharing about your project.  We look forward to helping you further.

  • Hi Zhicheng Ren,

Could you please help me and inform me anout how you load specific binary patterns on the DMD with drivers?
what is your mean of drivers?
in fact I want to use DMD in a setup as a part to reflect my interested pattern on the base of my own light source.
but I don't know how I can control individual mirrors,
    Regards,
    Sheida
  • Hi Sheida

I am sorry. I am ordering the DMDs right now. And in fact I have no ideas on how to load a picture on DMD. But I am reading relevant metrials on line. Once I know something, we can share.

    regards,
    Zhicheng Ren
  • Hello Sheida,

The process of loading patterns on the DMD differs based on the DMD you are using. Each DMD has a dedicated controller and each controller has a Programmer's Guide which outlines how to interact with the DMD. If you are using the DMD for research or evaluation, you might consider one of our Evaluation Modules, most of which come with easy to use GUIs.

Feel free to post a question in a new thread if you have any specific questions about your application.

    Best regards,
    Trevor
